I wouldn't be surprised if there are more than just Tenzin's family as airbenders. There are a lot of people wearing Airbender/Nomad/Monk clothing in the background of some of the shots in the Air Temple. Maybe just airbenders that never got trained for the entire 100 year span of the war, or just people that had no idea they could airbend until Aang came back. Or maybe they find some small isolated group of Airbenders like the water bending swamp dwellers.

I do really like the idea of Korra learning to give people bending, as that was probably the original source of bending in and of itself--the first Avatar learned to do all 4, and gave 1 each to a group of people.

I think the people living at the Air Bender island are just people learning to become monks, or wanting to live the Airbender lifestyle. Tenzin and his kids are the only airbenders around.

You know it is possible that Amon isn't really taking away bending permanently, but instead is just using a very advanced Chi blocking technique to take it away temporarily. They did mention his group is full of Chi blockers, and creating a "holy shit!!!" moment is enough to send panic throughout the bending world, which is clearly his goal.

I should note I know nothing about this series beyond the 3 episodes so I may be wrong.

Well, there's something to his story, at least the part about getting it from the spirits -- it is entirely possible, if my thought about imbalance is correct. Some spirit did talk to him, and offered a way to bring balance. We have seen that the spirits aren't afraid of violence in the name of balance, and different spirits can have very different views and goals. It's entirely possible some more aggressive equivalent to the lion-turtle taught him... or that the lion-turtle itself did; it's ancient, vast, and almost impossible to understand. Keep in mind that Korra has no inclination towards the Spiritual side of being the Avatar. Maybe Amon has this power to force Korra to approach the spirit world more seriously.

Amon taking away Korra's ability to bend at some point and than she potentially would need get it back opening her needing to delve into the spirit world. Something that she's ignored up to this point.

99% sure that the people aren't airbenders and are just studying the lifestyle of the Airbenders as mentioned in the post below yours. After all.. the only airbenders around are Tenzin, his children.. and then the Avatar. I mean, otherwise.. they'd have to basically create random Air Benders just for this sole purpose. :< I'm thinking the 'spoilers' weren't all correct after all.

In regards to whether he's spirit bending or not, as bad as Tumblr can be, there was a really good post on there explaining how what Amon did in comparison to the Lion Turtle and Aang.. was completely not spiritbending, but yeah.. maybe just a better form of chi blocking based on his 'henchmen' doing the same. I'm thinking it's all a show, and he's not spiritbending someone's bending away for good, but using it as a scare tactic, knowing the big gathering would attract the Avatar. So he gets her to come there, scares her with the spiritbending (along with the others there), then lets her escape so she can spread the word, considering everyone will listen to the Avatar. Sends mass panic for him without him getting his hands dirty. Plus he still looks like a good guy who wants peace considering he 'removed bending' away from the Triad leaders.

Eh, they still attack the group like they're going for the kill (or for the remove bending kill). It isn't until amon says to let them go that they do. I think it's legit, for some reason the dude can just take away bending.

They could have *easily* caught them if they truly wanted to (Hello, they have cars/motorcycles.. and Korra-gang is running away on a polar bear dog..)

I think that he wanted to give the threat that he was after them. Mind tricks; all villains have them.

I think Akiyama's idea is great but we have to remember, at it's heart this is a kid's show. I doubt the plot would get that complicated.

Also when they bring out the crowd and start singling them out one by one you can see a guy visibly shaking out of fear, so I can only assume the threat is real.

I was wondering the same thing, but who knows what happened in the past 70 years. Toph taught people how to metal bend, I'm sure someone could have done that with lightning.

Not only did she teach them, but Toph could only metal bend by touch, and it was rough. The metal benders now can do it with great finesse. I'd guess with Fire Nation no longer regulating bending anyone could learn more advanced techniques or different ways to do them.

Industrialization might not exactly require it, but the rapid pace of it would certainly suggest the applied use of bending in industry. It makes a lot of sense that firebenders, especially commoners, would learn to use lightning bending to charge energy sources. Zuko knew how, and he would promote it. Lightning bending as a power source is a bit paradoxical if you think about it too long, though...
