Marathoned TLA and Korra over the past week or so. Both surprised this is something that wound up on Nick at times, but also pleased its something that actually came from some minds in the US (I hope).
Toph probably wound up being my favorite character, though I figured she'd grow up to be a bit more stocky.
It's kinda the point of the character that you don't have to be a walking mountain of muscle to be a great earthbender.
Which is what she originally was supposed to be.

Glad they made her a little blind girl, just made Toph more awesome.
I have a question. If the Avatar is supposed to be master over the 4 elements, why isn't he/she master over the subcategories of elements as well?
I suppose they technically could, but I think it's just that they have enough trouble learning all four elements and avatar stuff, never mind specializing in all elements too. From what I gathered, learning earth bending doesn't mean you know metal.
I would bet that the Avatar could learn the more advanced techniques. Aang probably learned to metalbend as well, but we just never see it.
I don't think anything stops an avatar from learning the specialties. I think the writers just don't have it happen so that the other cast members aren't completely out-shined.
Pretty sure Korra used Ice and healing which I would consider sub categories of water, no?
I would like to know if air has any specialties. Soundbending, maybe? Maybe the air scooter counts?
Airbending, hmm. Maybe the ability to make yourself invisible, or suffocate enemies from afar?
It's a good question. Supposedly the Avatar as a very easy time mastering the elements, so he/she shouldn't have a problem metalbending etc. I'm guessing it's just to give other characters a role and not make the Avatar too powerful. I don't think there's really anything to stop them from learning them with enough training.
Or maybe it requires a certain affinity to do it? Not all Firebenders can lightningbend, and not all Earthbenders can metalbend, although that might be due to lack of training. My point is; Korra has used ice and healing I believe, so maybe the Avatar can only learn the sub-category of his original bending? For Korra that would be water, and for Aang air.
Once they master the Avatar state I imagine they can bend every element possible, it is calling on the previous lives' experience, after all.
So if they knew it, the current Avatar can know it.
Yeah, I assume now that people metal-bending exists, it's one of those things the Avatar has to set out to learn eventually. If it wasn't for Toph being blind, she would never have detected the earth in the refined metal and the fact that metal-bending was possible would never have been found.
Ice is common waterbending control not really a specialty. Aang used ice at least a few times I think. Healing is like metal bending and lightning which can be learned through proper training as shown in LoK. Blood bending may even be the same way but it's very difficult to do and it's outlawed so you can't practice it. In the episode where Katara learns how to blood bend it's almost more to do with visualization as demonstrated by ripping water from plants. Also Toph just was able to "see" the mineral content of metal and basically bend the microparticles. Overall I think it just boils down to how talented you actually are.
Aang's story was very destiny driven to a point. Otherwise he just ended up basically stumbling and attracting the best talent the bending world had seen in a long time. My assumption would be that the Avatar can learn any form of bending but again it just boils down to whether they would need to. Being able to use the Avatar state they immediately seem to have nature bent to their will.
On a side note it could easily be construed that the Avatar state had blood bending and was able to cancel out his opponent's because of having a stronger spirit or whatever.
I just now found out about this series but I can't find the first episode anywhere. Anyone know where I can watch this series w/o DL'ing it.
