Aang learned fire pretty easily. He was afraid of it, but had no problem at all learning it.

Earth gave him a very hard time though.

You're right, was confusing the two since Fire was last book.

Meanwhile, Korra mastered water AND fire np, despite being a waterbender by nature. I'm guessing the avatar's original element doesn't matter as much as his/her personality. I would have thought that would be the case, though, going into the series.

I think personality is definitely a more viable reason for the Avatar having difficulty learning an element rather than just their parent's heritage.

I believe the core idea behind each bending style is the mindset. As the Avatar, since they have access to all four elements by nature, the heritage of the parents to me doesn't seem quite as much an issue when it comes to how difficult it is for the Avatar to learn other elements as compared to their personality. Our personalities strongly shape our ideals and beliefs after all, which directly affects a person's bending (or so I'd like to believe, based on what I've seen in the show).

It just so happened that the examples of Avatars we do extensively know who suffered difficulties with learning other style, such as Aang and Roku, just so happened to be their nation's natural opposite, being Air vs Earth and Fire vs Water respectively. It probably isn't something set it stone and has a variety of situations.

Well, the air bending master in Korra (don't remember his name) DID say in one of the episodes that it's the avatar's personality personality, and that the avatar would have the hardest time learning the element that is furthest away from them their personality. Hence why I brought it up. I believe it's the episode where she first starts training.

It's an interesting point in that it makes me think about the archetypical personas of the different elements and their people. I guess with air there's much more of a shared philosophy among the nomads while I don't know if the water tribes have that or if the contrast between someone like Korra and Katara is showing the way water can be both soothing and tempestuous.

Tempraments are probably much more varied among the other three nations, though observing Gyatso and Aang, Air Nomad attitudes weren't perfectly aligned; Gyatso and Aang were much more adventurous, freewheeling, and light-hearted than the other more stern, serious monks. Even Meelo seems to be rather different from his rather serious father.

Even though he was calmer than most, Aang was clearly a more spirited individual, otherwise he wouldn't have had it in him to run away when he heard he'd have to leave his temple for Avatar training. It's this spirit that probably facilitated his mastery of the fire element, which, actually, kind of got away form him when he first learned it.

Romance Will be More Prominent in Book 2 of The Legend of Korra Due to Love Triangles
The Tumblr and Reddit communities went into frenzy yesterday when they read that Book 2 would be more romantic. And the general feedback was not very good: A lot of people were extremely disappointed. Some people even tried to justify that Book 2 would only be romantic during the times that Makorra’s relationship is developed. Unfortunately for the non-believers, this is false.

Book 2 will be more romantic as a whole, and Mike DiMartino confirmed it in an interview:
‘In Avatar, we have plenty of relationship stuff going on — love triangles and stuff like that — but I think the ones we deal with in Book Two, we’ve never done before. They’re different dynamics.” – Mike DiMartino
Well there you have it: Love Triangles; but not just any Love Triangles, more dynamic ones. Korra likes Mako and so does Asami. Bolin likes Korra but he’s involved in another ‘bizarre’ relationship. And Mako likes Korra back, but he still has Asami in the back of his mind.

It’s complicated stuff, and it seems like a big romantic mess.

Whether you like it or not, Book 2 will be romantic. Book 1 has set up too much controversy for it to just be left alone for an entire book. And because this Love Triangle is so dynamic and complex, I expect it to overlap into Book 3 and possibly even Book 4.

But let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

Romance as the focus? Do not want. It's nice to have occasionally or as side stuff, but if I wanted to watch romance I wouldn't be watching a cartoon about bending elements.

Totally...well, let's just wait and see. I think that article does possibly misinterpret the quote a little.
Honestly though, if the focus is more romance crap I'm going to be ill. It wasn't done that well in the first season and I doubt it will be any better in the second season.

    The article assumes alot actually.

If you read that full interview it doesn't say that it will be be THE focus just more prominent. He uses "love triangles" as his examples of what romance plot lines they've used before it isn't meant to be an example of what they are going to do. He even goes on to say "but I think the ones we deal with in Book Two, we’ve never done before. They’re different dynamics." They mention two specific examples: Korra and Mako dealing with having important jobs (Avatar and a Cop) in different places yet still maintaining a relationship and Bolin getting some sort of romance that is "one of the most bizarre love stories".

I'm typically fairly indifferent to the romance plot lines but I am kinda interested in what Bolin's "bizarre" romance will be.

Considering romance had one full episode dedicated to it and major parts of several other ones, I'd say making it more prominent than it already was will pretty much make it the focus of the show.

Why does everything Bolin get involved with have to be a comedy routine now? Either that or they're going to go down the "Nice guy gets psycho / secret enemy girlfriend but is too nice to break it off" route.

    Ah yes, "The Search" comic.

You know if anything, I'd love it if they could make that into a feature length movie or something. Sigh~

It's because he is the new Sokka, just less funny and not nearly as much of a chick magnet.

Aang looks both disappointed (by the tears) and angry.. (setting the fire-nation part of his necklace there) so.. un-needed drama? Yay.

But seriously. Gene deciding it's a good idea for Aang to change his ideology and have him kill Zuko is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. Not kill Ozai.. but sure, let's just kill Zuko. Good thinking! Fucking 'tard.
