Windows 7 64bit Crashing

Hmmm, I was worried there would be no dumps because it's not bluescreening >< Best I can guess atm is try to do a linux live-disc boot and just stay in that for a pretty long time, and see if you can get the crash in there. If so then it's 100% hardware and it makes troubleshooting this substantially easier. As of now there could be a million things and it's hard to know where to start; especially over the internet.

You can download a live distro of any flavor of linux and run it. Hereis the link to the Ubuntu page which is I guess you could say the more popular distro for non-techies. You can use USB or CD/DVD for the live boot. You may have to go into your BIOS on bootup and change the boot device priority to be Cd/DVD>HDD or USB>HDD so that it'll boot from your device. As soon as the computer starts there should be a screen that says "Push this button to enter settings" or something similar.

Also I was able to play a bunch of SC2 without it crashing. Which is funny cause before it used to run FFXI fine, and SC2 crashed a lot. The problem is now, FFXI is crashing like a mofo. GDI.

Edit: I also have WhoCrashed, but it doesn't say anything about any of these crashes. I don't get a blue screen just a complete freeze and horribly loud noise.

Edit 2: Just had FF crash only. Usually doesn't do this.

That seems to be an ATI driver issue. Try updating your video drivers and see if that helps.

Edit: OK some people are claiming getting the latest Catalyst Control Center as helping. Haven't bothered with ATI cards in ages and can't remember if that comes by default with cards. Either way as GSDragoon said upgrade drivers all the way and try the newest CCC (if it doesnt' come with the drivers).

Mine was freezing on me for a long time. I finally broke down and flashed my motherboard bios with a more up to date version. That in combination with new video drivers seems to have stabilized my system.

I got the newest vid card drivers a few days ago because this vid card is new and I just installed it a few days ago. >_> Unless a brand new catalyst driver came out like yesterday.

Just reiterating in case you missed it, did you make sure your hard drive is not at fault? Would suck to jump through a bunch of hoops when the fault could be that simple.

Seriously, just live-boot Linux and run it for a while. You can still surf the web and wait for it to crash in the meantime. It really is the easiest way to rule out software/hardware. If it doesn't crash it's probably software in windows, if it does it's hardware.

BTW, when did this all start? You say it was happening before the new vid card so how long has it been happening?

Edit: I think you guys are gonna have to be a little more specific with em. He said he knows absolutely nothing about PC's so gonna guess he has no idea what to do or how to check a HDD failing (I certainly mean no offense Not Kuno).

Here is the tool to download and run for your Seagate 500gb drive which I'm gonna guess is your Windows installed drive and the one the games are on (if it isn't you need the one from Western Digital). I can get you the link for the WD one if needed, but if it's just mass storage and no games/OS on it it's not important right now. Need to check the OS drive first.

Well I responded on the first page with a link to Hd tune, it takes less than 2 minutes to rule out the hard drive. I'm under the impression SC2 is not the only program that freezes the computer, if so.. shit sounds familiar.

I got HD scan, not sure what to do with it? Benchmark? Error tests? All of it? lol

Quick scan for error test on both HD came up all clear.

Edit: Spin retry count on one came up warning, though

I know little about HD Tune, but someone in this thread says it doesn't really report Spin Retry Count properly and to use Seatools (the one I posted) to check your drive. Try it and give it a full error check with SeaTools.

Edit: Also, a under-powered power supply can cause this error. Could you tell me what your PSU size is? It's not listed in the spec sheet above (if it is it totally blended with all the text).

Edit 2 (trying not to post-spam): In this thread another person saying HD Tune sometimes gives fake results (no idea wtf they mean by this @.@). Anyway the last post says it's normal behavior for Seagates if it's only slight. I don't use Seagates so I can't comment. Just some more info for ya to digest.

Windows 7 has made Event Viewer a lot easier to access. Just hit Start and put in Event Viewer in the search box. Or you could go Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer if you want to do it the hard way.

Look in the Application and System logs for red !'s. Those are errors the system had and they might give you some insight into the problem.

Before you buy anything, run a test. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ has a few on it (burn the ISO and boot from it). Memtest86+ is good. Usually, if there's a RAM problem, you'll start seeing errors pretty quickly after starting it.

Usually the kind of error you're seeing there is due to software trying to access a portion of RAM that it's not allowed to or that doesn't exist. It could just as easily be a driver problem.

I assume as well that you're running things at stock speeds/timing?

Yeah I don't OC anything. I ran a (quick) memtest from boot and it was ok. But I'm at a loss at what it could be. :/
