Someone has been dating someone for 5+ years. You are very used to the person, you had a lot of good times together. Over the years though, you have grown further, and further apart. You are starting to realize that you aren't as happy with them as you were before. They started to change over the years and its just not the same but you remember the good times that you once had and hope that maybe if you stick with them, things will go back to how they were.

Thats why people stick with this game even if they are unhappy. They feel like if they just give up on it they wasted all that time they had together because they knew at one point, they were very happy together and hoping that feeling will come back.

Maybe its an extreme example, but the point behind it is, many people stay and pay for their accounts because they are attached to the game. They really have no reason to keep paying for it other then they are used to it or that really don't think they have any other MMO to go to.

I haven't played since October. I miss my linkshell, but I also miss the world. Vana'diel is a fantastic place, I care about the characters and the story and I have a deep connection with my characters. For as much as the Dev team is fucking up, I still like the world and want it to not be ruined by some maniac's idea of "balance". For as much as I want to smack every member of the Dev Team with a nerf bat for their chicanery as of late, I still want to go back and have awesome times with Septimus and Atum roaming the land in search of adventure.

I actually enjoy this game. It just so happens that I enjoyed it a lot MORE before the new regime came in with Abyssea and Voidwatch and such. It was better then, but it's still fun now.

On the other hand I'm in the extreme minority I guess because I actually have no qualms with what they're doing now (fixing Ukko's and whatnot).

*EDIT* I should specify a bit more because there was a period of horrible updates that I think people have forgotten.. namely, most everything WOTG related, the first updates with Walk of Echoes and so on (it has become better since). In my opinion, the game was best during the CoP and ToAU eras. Then it went downhill with the WOTG era. It's gotten better recently but it's still got a long way to go. They're still relying on gimmicks with new content and that frustrates me. Excluding the most recent set of VW NMs which I haven't bothered with (so I can't comment on them), SE hasn't added an interesting fight to the game in years.

I have a humble suggestion, since most players are unwilling to quit to send a message, how about canceling for a month?

If someone were to stage a big "Cancel February" to send SE a message that you don't like where the game is going, would any of you be willing to sacrifice not playing the game for that month? How many players do you think would be needed to cancel that month to send that message? Right now SE probably counts on a 300k times 12 bucks a month from us, if we hurt them for one month, it really affects them as a public company.

Seriously, the only way to bring about positive changes is to make the money talk. They won't listen to your words, but they will listen to your money. If 500 people canceled for a month, I'm pretty sure we would see some changes.

The only thing they seem to care about right now is FFXIV, just don't ever play that and make sure you say you won't whenever you can. They don't really care, or at least think we are all too dumb to actually quit Xi this far into the addiction. the amount of content they have been adding the last year has been shocking, and most everyone has serious issues with what they are adding.

Given how much money they are blindly throwing at FFXIV and how important it is for a JP company to save face (V2 failing would be unbeliveably humiliating) I think it's probably what's going on here. FFXIV has a tiny playerbase and very little hope of attracting a huge following to warrant such huge sums on money and so many people working on it, sabotaging XI seems to be their business strategy (cause lets be honest, thats the only possible playerbase that piece of shit game is EVER gonna get). Risky and retarded because it could backfire horrendously and they could lose the majority of that playerbase instead of trasnfering them all over, but that's how Square operate.
