They added Afterglow (lightsabers) to combat Star Wars. They got lucky.
Diablo 3 is coming, what are they gonna do to combat that onslaught?
edit: as far as I know there is no monthly fee to play Diablo 3

I'm wondering what they're going to do for the 10 year anniversary. My expectations are much too high, but 10 years is a long f'ing time. Some marriages don't last that long. I think we should have a lower monthly fee, and maybe another room for our moghouse where we can hit a punching bag for skillups or some crazy shit.
and When it swings back at us we can skill up parry, shield and guard. Right moving on.
Haha... sorry for reducing your decade-long video game discussion with a moment of levity. Carry on.
Realistically I think a price cut would be the only/greatest thing we'd ever get.
It's not like they have a new team working on stuff, and they just started charging for XIV so...
This. Why the fuck would they cut prices? It's not going to bring in or retain nearly enough subscriptions to justify the loss on existing accounts and... well I almost said SE isn't in the business of throwing money away but I'm not sure I can actually say that with a straight face.
If they did a bulk sub where I could buy a year for like $100, maybe I'd do that and not care so much if I didn't play for a month or two at a time. Otherwise, I'm looking at $160 for 10 months, $32 more for 12.
SE is never going to cut subs for FFXI lol, it's the only thing making them money in their online department.
I guess XIII-2 isnt selling well at all?
I guess im not sure what the numbers should look like. What all the sales for USA?

Well, according to a post in this thread, its the 4th highest selling PS3 game in Japan. Not sure how true that is.
From the same post though, FFXIII sold about 1,870,000 copies compared to FFXIII-2's ~800,000 and apparently FFXIII did not recoup its production cost. (Most people say that FFXIII-2 is much better than the first game though.) I am sure that FFXIII-2 cost less to make because the game engine was already developed and they probably reused and re-purposed a lot of the models, even so, not exactly stellar news.
I also get the feeling this the main issue, more than hitting a large number of sales. I would imagine the production costs for Final Fantasy NUMBER games are incomprehensibly huge nowadays, particularly compared to the production costs for more old-fashioned RPGs and/or RPGs on mobile platforms.
They can sell a very impressive number of copies, but since the cost of making the games is so high now, they actually need to sell a super-duper interstellar fuckdamn impressive number of copies instead.
I know even less about economics than I know about living a fulfilled and happy life, though, so I am probably horribly wrong somehow.
To continue being way off topic, 1.8M copies sold...in Japan only maybe. 13's total was closer to 6 million total. 13-2 will probably sell about 1/3 of that (I think last I heard first week sales in the US/EU were like 500-600k+whatever Japan has sold).
1.8 mil was indeed Japan only, not worldwide.
Man FFXI would never go F2P even if a mass exodus happened, they would shut it down way before it ever came to that because they would be too dumb to figure out how to have micro-transactions and fail horribly at it.
I would love to see a small exodus happen just to see what they would do though. I always believed they made good decisions on XI when people got fed up with the bullshit and started to leave the game.
To be fair, ff isn't as popular in Japan as it is in the west. Their first week sales figures for PS3 was about 60% of the number shipped, which is a pretty decent figure. This also means to say they were expecting far less units to sell, because the amount they shipped was like 2/3 the amount that sold for XIII in its first week.
A few important factors to take note of:
It's not the first FF on the PS3 anymore
It's not an entirely new main numbered FF
Consumer confidence was possibly shaken with FFXIV
Regardless, it's still a decent commercial success and I believe it'll reap in more sales from copies and DLC over the next few months. More importantly, it's received critical acclaim from a majority of players thus far. I think that's more important
