So I asked a friend who's familiar with gambling laws across nations (works at an Indian casino, but before that a Vegas casino) and they said that likely its because of a few things.

1: It's a lottery that you 'pay into' via a monthly subscription. The more mules = more chances makes this a possibility.
2: Some states have very direct laws regarding lotteries/contests; they're worded so that no minor period can collect a prize in a lottery or contest, even if its not a 'tangible' possession.

There's a couple others they thought might apply but those 2 are the ones that usually catch people when entering into contests. It's not so much about getting sued for damages, it's that a state/national govt could 'investigate' and levy a fine based on whatever law is on the books, which may or may not force SE to provide information on how many under gambling age people are playing for the purpose of giving/avoiding a huge fine, which they can't do.

It only takes one money-hungry douche playing the victim to sue SE over gambling issues and a modern idiot judge to bankrupt SE. Why would they risk it, I'm surprised they did it this long.

Shouldn't Voidwatch be illegal under the same logic as Bonanza?

    1. Buy Voiddust/cells | Bonanza Marble
    2. Kill Monster | Kill time
    3. Disappointment | Disappointment, but hey, I got a statue for my mog house

Make bonanza legal again by killing a monster?

The only thing I can think they'd do is to add a new tier to the mystery boxes. 5000 points for the Big Gold chest with same odds as winning a Bonanza prize.
What they could do is make a week or so of Super Mystery Boxes where people have the chance for Bonanza prizes and what not with the same odds. They could hype of the event, and it would be hard to construe it as a "lottery" since you aren't buying the marbles for it. Although I am sure someone enterprising lawyer (read as: complete douchebag) could argue that it is if they felt like it.

Probably because there is a drawing to pick a winner for the bonanza, where as Voidwatch is a random roll for every person that you have to do something to get.

I've been curious for a while about why the freezer thing works, but it does.
I played ffxi on two PS2s; the first took a static discharge from my brother's wool sock and never turned on again, the second still works today (4 years). They're pretty reliable, but ffxi on a PS2 is another story. Always locks up on NPCs in laggy zones (Assault tag NPC when Aht Urghan was crowded was especially annoying), frequently crashes at the end of graphic intense cutscenes, and can't handle large zergs--the initial lag is just a transition to an inevitable black screen -> reboot. (so much for Voidwatch).

TS; for me when I tried it, it was freezing on the tele npc to WG a bit ago.

I've heard for those that have server transferred (moved on your own accord or were merged onto another server like I was) that the PS2 version has more of a tendency to freeze on talking to npcs. That could be stupid rumor but it could be true too.

And yes it can still freeze on certain cs's, especially ones that have to do with Wings of the Goddess; you understand this was a lot of trust but a friend trusted me to log in his account and unstick him (I mostly play PC now a days; PS2 version is only a backup now). Told him if I had to unstick him, he'd better go watch the offending CS on Youtube every time. They still haven't fixed that; I think they said they did but they sure haven't, considering I had to unstick him like 10-11 times..

Probably, yes. They're doing POL Maintenance at the same time though, so maybe not as quickly as normal?

pretty long maint too. its like 10h 30s.
6am to 4:30pm in japan, which means it starts at 5am for me, which is my usual sleep time.

guess i'll try to sleep early and do it when i wake up, by which time it should be up for me to do my usual gfx/music mine

Have they fully enforced SquareEnix Accounts for all yet?

Trying to fathom why it'd be that long.

I think they did ages ago.

Didn't someone say such a long maint is an annual thing?

I don't think it is. It looks like some kind of major hardware overhaul.

Not really ages ago... May was when my account was deactivated due to not switching.

Yeah, it kept getting delayed/pushed back that I lost track.

A shame POL still hasn't been slimmed down yet strictly to booting right into XI after you verify your log-in credentials.

Kind of silly that they're finally nerfing the Holy Water NPC price.

I cannot force an update yet.

    Edit:
I forced an update to the POL client. It gave me some bullshit when it restarted (wanted me to direct it to its installation package), but it might just have been because of the files I removed to force the update. Now it seems to be working fine. Always back up your force files, kids!
