Recast timers only artificially prolong the event. If you look at an event like Legion, you can go whenever, but the time and coordination necessary don't give incentive to perpetually repeat the event.

Like Yugl said it's just artificially inflating the staying power of the event. To add to that, I think the assault timer is equally bogus. Its kind of a shitty trick to pull; the amount of content is extremely small, so put ridiculous restrictions on it so people do it for longer. It's actually worse than assault though. I've tried this event extensively on the test server. Many of the expeditions are soloable in 5-10 minutes. With a 20 hour retry timer, it's just bad. For 25 expeditions it will take 20 days at minimum to try each just once. I'm not going to go into much more detail here, but I posted on the SE forum in more detail and it was based on lots of experience with it on the test server.
Other games have 1 week timers on raids, why is something that is 20h bad?
Because I can solo the event in 5-10 minutes and FFXI drop rates usually suck. Mostly the latter. (And other games doing it doesn't make it good design, but that's besides the point.) The progression of the event means you can only try a boss NM once in every five runs, btw, even less if you spend time gathering buffs from other expeditions.
Patch notice: An issue has been found wherein the effects of Mighty Strikes can be be used during weaponskills under certain conditions.Originally Posted by Okipuit

And this post makes it seem like the Bst two hour won't be dependent on the pet's actual HP, just max HP. Which is slightly less worthless, I'll admit.
It's bad because those games with 1 week lockouts usually have something else to occupy your time like PvP, global events or other raids. XIs limited selection of group events isn't really going to be improved when your crowning event is summed up as a 15min event once a day.
Voidwatch is already on the skids.
Well yeah, but if you were a new player you'd have a lot to do.
Also, this is why XI sucks. Expansion won't fix that, lol.
blue mage sucks
Post from Matsui responding to all of the comments - my translation (official will come later I'm sure):
Thank you for all of your posts!
With this, we will close this thread.
In Japan, North America, and Europe, there have been quite a volume of posts. When I first posted here, I promised that I would read all of the submissions so that I could get a sense of the collective feelings of the community. I will use these submissions as a reference when thinking about the future of Final Fantasy XI.
While I'm here, I do have just one more favor to ask of you. To the extent possible, could each of you please take a look at what has been posted in this thread?
Companions that share adventures each day, linkshell fellows that have spent a long time together... as the distance between them shrinks, their play style is formed by people who share similar ideas. In this thread there are some posts from those people.
There are also posts from people with a completely different way of thinking. What they want may be different from what you think should happen. By all means, please try to understand their point of view.
To continue to protect the Final Fantasy XI that we all love... we cannot accomplish this without everyone's cooperation. I cherish the community of Final Fantasy XI and I want to see everyone come together. The greatest thing about the Final Fantasy XI community is that we have so many people who have such a variety of ideas. I am now a little more aware of this, and I would feel lucky if you would continue to provide your opinions from a positive perspective.
We kindly ask for your cooperation in the future.
My reading of this: RDM melee buffs inc.
This guy has replied once and already shows he's more sly and had more social grace than Tanaka. By asking us to read the thread ourselves he's trying to show us the variety of opinions different players have about the direction the game should go. One critical flaw is that players from different regions won't be reading (by and large) the other regions' responses, but it at least shows he has thought about how to mediate the differences in the playerbase instead of just giving one-size-fits-all no-explanation content.
Yeah. He even specifically called it "rude" of him that he was asking a favor of us to read through all the posts, but that doesn't conceptually translate well into English so I left it out and just tried to imply it with the tone. Seems to be a nice guy... suppose we'll find out as the months go by whether that niceness translates to the kind of updates and new content that players have been asking/hoping for.
I gotta say, that is a rather crafty post.
Good stuff from the Producer based on what you guys have said.
After the thread is closed I plan on summarizing all of the stuff said in the English thread (which is going to be hard, I don't think I'm going to categorize it by likes like someone suggested previously however) but one of the major problem is that I can't currently read Japanese.
A separate summary of the JP thread with some notes of what is very popular there would definitely help towards the reason I've been considering a summary though - to list out what we suggested and see how much of it they release. It would help us see what the JP players want, and see how much of that we get and how much of what we want we get, and how much we agree or disagree. I think for the most part the JP players address many similar points that we do despite divergent styles, so even a very highly condensed translation, or even just a translation of very popular posts would be highly helpful. Really I should just start trying to learn Japanese so I don't bother anyone with something like this. :\
Regardless, the tone of our new Producer is very promising, so I'm thinking doing this summary I've been mulling over will allow us to have a sort-of scorecard for the year or two ahead.
Regarding Community Team, don't worry, they are just as much chumps on the XIV side.
They remind me of the guy from Office Space who deals with the people.
The Japanese thread is over twice as long as the NA thread. I can take a cursory look through and translate the concepts for some of the posts with the most likes so we can get a general idea. I'm not going to do full translations of anything though, would take way too long.
