Normal zombies: I'd buy a raft and go to the public pool, and tie it down in the middle of the water. Zombies can't swim, and it's only like two miles away.

Super swimming zombies: Fetal position in my closet.

Well since someone asked lets say they are Fast zombies and for fun lets assume that its resident evil zombies, alive for months, maybe more and no problems that stop them from continuing.

Then lets take a situation where you are OUT of supplies and you HAVE to more or leave the safety of your house/bunker ect.

Do you try for said safeplace you heard about? Do you try to unite with family and friends or go it alone?

Also for anyone saying guns, sure it is a good idea for a while but ammo isn't infinite and you will need, at some point, a reusable weapon. I for one would go with a medium sized ax or sledgehammer as a sword that is actually heavy enough to cut through bone and isn't just for show like most decorative samurai swords are, is hard as hell to find when everyone is raiding said places. The biggest problem with them is at some point they will crack or break and your SoL. A sledgehammer of good quality can handle bones and tissue to a better extent, the guns handle people better even if it isn't loaded and the hammer can be found in most garages which is something that is plentiful in the suburbs.

If I had to choose a place to hide it would be at one of the empty farmer jacks that closed around here in the rafters or on the roof, this way if someone or something wanders in, they won't take you by surprise and you can make it so the only way up is a rope ladder. I think I could find enough food raiding houses to sustain for a while as most will be out at the stores.

So with these new developments what would you do?

I live within 20 miles of 3 military bases. another 50 and there is a 4th. I would go next door, talk to my neighbor who pilots a C-130 gunship. Have him teach me how to use the big damn guns on that thing and go cause some fucking havoc. Then I would have him land it at the Navy base, and we would commandeer a fucking ship.

Typically, bandits or rioters stand in for zombies as they are considered brainless, soulless or have otherwise devolved into a state of being which could be considered animalistic or subhuman. A high degree of the discussion is about preparedness in 'shit hit the fan' (shtf) scenarios. It's more about what you're stocking up on (food, ammo, tools, medical supplies, etc), the skills you might be learning (first aid, marksmanship, agriculture/gardening, welding, electrical generation/wiring, communications, etc) and what your personal plan is (depending on what occurred/what you're up against, where you are when you find out, where your family/friends are, how many of those family/friends you can safely gather or move or sustain for any period of time). For me, they are interesting mental exorcises, but for others it is serious planning for the worst of what society may degrade into.

One thing I can say for certain is that for those of you thinking that you can raid a walmart, supermarket or gunshop when shtf, understand that your entire town is thinking the same thing. The likeliness that the roads are even going to be clear enough for you to get where you want to go and pack your trunk full of stolen goods is minimal at best, you thought rush hour traffic was bad-this is the apocalypse. If you even manage to get to these stores, what do you think is going to be left for you to grab? Shit that isn't going to be worthwhile is likely all that's going to be left for you to nab-it's pre-blizzard/christmas eve shopping on a level never before seen. If you, an educated functional member of society, think it's ok to loot a store, that store's probably already been looted by dregs before you even considered it. One of my favorites is people saying that they are going to board up their house. You have a lot of loose lumber and nails hanging around your house? Better start thinking now about which walls in your house are structural because you're going to need to harvest some studs after you knock some of the non-structural ones down. Good luck with the nails.
Point being, you probably aren't going to be able to go anywhere anytime soon and if you aren't already stocked up on the things you need to survive long enough for the crisis to pass or for you to move more easily, you're done for.
Well that takes all the fun out of it.

Depending on where it happened and how quick I find out about it, I'd try to find my friends. I know roads are bad but most of us have motorcycles and we all have bicycles (lolCream Soda it up). Since I live in a hick town, I'm sure there's plenty of guns around, but I'd try to get more if I could. I'd carry a nice aluminum bat unless I could find a really nice sharp axe. The crowbar is a good idea too, but I don't think I have one of those.

If it comes down to it, do a Resident Evil:Apocalypse style convoy, but without all the kids or dumbasses who get bit.

Nah, people just need a more pragmatic approach than just "I'm going to Walmart, shoot everyone inside and lock the doors". If you think about a plan like that for a minute you can poke 100 holes in it.

Not to mention that if time goes by and it turns out that it was a temporary crysis (or fabricated, remember the story of the first radio airing of War of the Worlds?), how many crimes did you commit that you could have avoided?

The hardest part to get through would be the first week or so when everyone is panicking. No virus is going to give zombies any better sensory functions than we have already, so I'd just make sure no light can get out through my windows, lock my doors, and not make any noise for a week (even in this shitty bachelor house, we should have enough food for at least that long). Once the initial human die-off is through, I would start thinking of where I could barricade myself for the long term (till the zombies die off via starvation or exposure). It's THIS point that you start thinking of gun-shops, hardware stores, and grocery stores. Assuming all the stupid people are going to try to go for them right off the bat, then they'll undoubtedly kill each other off and the shelves aren't likely to be empty, I don't think.

Go down to the base while rounding up my un-infected sailor buddies, untie the carrier, float it out into the middle of the basin and use it as a base of operations with ammunition and food. Make sure JO's are rescued for helicopter ops.

Like $300 and durable enough to hack into a 55 gallon drum repeatedly, plenty strong enough to handle hacking up limbs.

I'd get a deer stand if I could find one, set that up in a tree out in the woods, use that to sleep in.

Most people would do better with a fireaxe or spear or something though, it would be pretty lame to bust out a katana and hack your leg open because you don't know wtf you're doing.

    Idealistic Scenario:
Friend is a massive paranoia type person and has a mass stockade of weapons/food and even a lock-in studio in his backyard that could double as a fort. Hold up there until the hysteria dies down then try to move up north to Canada in a caravan type scenario and meet up with another friend's family. Try to hold up in seclusion in a commune setting. On foot my main weapons would be a Sword for quick kills (typically a Katana), a smaller edged weapon either a machete or hunting knife, a crowbar used ideally for prying/smashing/wedging instead of combat, and lastly a handgun with limited ammunition used primarily for human intimidation if needed or long range combat. Of course this is assuming slow-type Zombies and not the hyperactive rushing Zombies... Fuck those zombies><.

    Spoiler: show

    Realistic Scenario:
Dying miserably in a pool of my own blood/cowardice being feasted upon by the dead. lol

None of you mention women, you fags. I'd collect zombie scalps and use it to pick up the finest bitches. The bitches would be like currency, I'd trade them for resources.

I'd gtfo of town and fuck off to my cottage in the middle of nowhere, raid the local shop for supplies and hunker down.

To all you people saying non ammunition weapons - If you had even the slightest cut on you and you sliced open a zombie and blood got into said cut. Bam you're a zombie?

How much ammo can one person realisticly stockpile for this though? If we're talking about the old school regular destroy the brain to stop them zombie then you would need to be a fucking crack shot. A decent rifle would be handy but ultimately you are going to need something for close quarters too. Also, band aids.

If you wanna get this technical, getting in your eye and possibly your mouth, you'd be fuck. But I know I'd personally be covered like mad so no splash residue got to me. If they want me, they're going to have to get through what I'm wearing.

What is it with the katana obsession? They're completely impractical and were never even considered more than a backup weapon in the first place. A kukri made from a discarded leaf spring is far more useful, both as a weapon and a utility tool.

I have actually thought about this and the answer is yeah, proper bandaging, lots and lots of gauze... I would also use a pro pair of goggles for protection from blood in the eyes. I just don't have that much faith in ammunition weaponry in a zombie situation but with a lot of ammo a single-barrel mossberg shotgun would do serious damage to a group of zombies :D.
