i am not a lobbyist, i am a political involvement coordinator. i work for an advocacy firm. most companies, most REAL COMPANIES, have a political affairs department within their government relations. these departments have two sides. the political action half and the political involvement half. political action is money, dolla dolla bill yall. they are called PACs, and pacs give money to legislators for their campaigns. political involvement is relationship based, no money involved.

it is my job to find and track relationships between our membership and federal legislators. we represent about 50 thousand people and of those 50 thousand a little bit over 1k have p strong personal relationships with their elected officials.

when there is a piece of legislation that could threaten our members or their industry it is my job to make sure that legislators hear about it from their constituents. a few times a year we host events that have our members come from around the country and visit with their legislators. just these last few weeks we had about 50 people in that have relationships with the freshmen of the 112 congress and we taught them the importance of being politically involved and politically active. no legislator wants to hear from a lobbyist, lobbyists are paid to represent interest groups. legislators want to hear from their constituents, from the people they represent. they want/need to know how things will affect their community back home.

you walk into a congressman's office and hand him a check for 2k and say "i need this, this, and this taken care of" the first thing he will do is take the check. the second thing he will do is say "you cant buy my vote"

Lobbyists are (or claim to be) the platform for a constituency, with more resources and access to representatives than the normal person. Donating to a campaign isn't illegal, and donating to a campaign and saying "hey, consider voting for this bill" isn't illegal either. You could go to your rep's office, drop a C-note, and ask them to introduce a bill legalizing weed if you want, but that won't do anything. If an advocacy group (like...what's that pro-pot group's name, PHARM?) gives them a couple thousand and shows them a list of 100,000 people in their district in support of legalizing it, that has a bit more.sway.
