The reactor originally is cooling thru the sea water anyway, that's the reason they have the reactor build at sea side. The main reason that cause this situation is because the generator to keep the sea water flow through the generator is malfunction. The only issue for them right now is had to reduce the temperature and pressure in the reactor, else the meltdown may cause all those radioactive materials straight into sea

they're using sea water because the cooling system failed and their replacement blew up. apparently, water lvl is @ 1.7m now while the nuclear fuel rods are 4m. without supplying any cooling fluid asap, the remaining water will be vaporized in no time = meltdown. also, the company running the plant had to get the gov's clearance for using sea water as cooling replacement.

i have no idea of the process itself tho. since the pumping system incl. replacement is gone, they probably just flood the whole reactor? also, the explosion incident has been categorized as lvl 4, accident with local consequences, on the INES scale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interna...ar_Event_Scale). that's somewhat relieving.

I don't think that's a real issue. China among other countries use their nuclear plants as water desalination facilities, as the steam itself is free from radiation (and salt/other pollutions) and can as such be drunk afterwards. I think the problem with using ocean water is that you get a lot of left-over salt. As this salt can't be used in food (for obvious reasons), and can't be left in the system because it'd clog it up. So unless the plant was specifically designed to work as a nuclear plant/water desalination facility, salt would eventually become a problem. Which is why I'm guessing the scientists say this is a desperate resort to cool it down, as the power plant (being 40 years old) may not be designed to work as a desalination facility.
