not to sound like a dick and be all omgusa, but has anyone reported/researched/etc what would happen to the US/globally if the different nuclear scenarios happen? Like, partial meltdown, full on meltdown, etc?

maybe if we owe them money they will ask for it back...
we fucked
Mate, you're not making any sense and towards the end of you post pre-edit I got completely lost in what you were trying to say.
The link I posted on the discussion is a page solely on KI by the CDC. The sources for the CDC page are the FDA and the NRC. I don't know why your RSO would tell you to take Iodine directly over KI, I imagine it would do the same thing but the studies and contracts utilized by most power plants call for KI tablets. The tablets are easier to distribute than the liquid form of KI. The FDA information is here and the NRC information is here.
I'm not saying that your RSO is wrong in stating that taking Iodine is important, as you're essentially doing the same thing by ingesting just Iodine as with KI, but to the extent of my knowledge and experience KI is what we use and to say that KI is ineffective or wrong is rather silly from my PoV.
There are always a great deal of research reports done by organizations such as the NRC and NISA and IAEA on what would happen in the event of a design basis casualty (which as others have commentated on previously is essentially the nuclear world having a wet dream about the most spectacular ways a system could fail).
That being said, Japan isn't having a DBC and the containment hasn't failed. Unless the containment fails, the reactor could melt away completely and the public would only be affected in the slightest in the local region with no world consequences (though radiation levels in the local vicinity would probably be higher than previous surveys). If the containment were to fail, then you start talking about fallout and spread. Scenarios are going to depend on a great many factors, such as thermal layers, wind patterns, stormfronts, force used and height of the radioactive plume from the breach, is it bleeding into the air or into the ground, water table levels if the latter, also type of soil and permeability, half life determinations, fuel concentrations, power history, et cetera.
As to what the damage is going to be after everything is said and done at Daiichi Units 1/2/3, we'll be waiting a while to know. Given the relatively low amount of contaminants so far found you'd be hard-pressed to show more than localized/regional effects.
Wolf Blitzer just got owned on CNN. He was raging about the nuclear plants in America withstanding an earthquake like the one in Japan. He didn't believe the engineer at the plant they had on the air that it could because he believed it had been built for a 7.0 earthquake. Now they have another expert tell him that the plants are built to withstand the earthquakes in the area they are built and that they don't build to the Ricther scale, they build to the ground movement speed that earthquakes cause and that the earthquake in Japan moved the earth so fast (I forget now) and that the plants in America are built to withstand much higher. Blitzer was tongue tied. He's been trying to rouse up panic all afternoon.

They probably measured it in g's, acceleration forces. The Richter scale requires triangulation between multiple points, building code is generally established to withstand a particular force/speed/energy enacting upon them at the point of the building itself. It's unfortunate but there is no direct correlation between the accelerometer unit readouts and the Richter scale, though we can generally say that such-and-such size earthquake is capable of doing such-and-such amount of force.

edit: oh god the comments rolling in on that video rofl
She an actor? She is good.
So I woke up this morning with a 'wtf' feeling, only to realize that it's anohter aftershock knocking shit off my walls again. What a nice way to start my day!
But at least they didn't blackout my area yesterday. Although they did cut power this morning at about 0700, but I was already at work. Hopefully they won't cut it tonight if people conserve as much as possible.
