Apparently there was a new earthquake south of Tokyo, near Mt. Fuji. A 6.4 quake that was really close to the surface.

Iirc the one that erupted was a fairly active one anyway and didn't really hurt anyone. With the way things have been going for Japan at this point I would bet on a major volcanic eruption whose smoke blots out the sun and drops the weather to Siberian temperatures too.

One of the British oldschool (that i'm a dear fan of) comics, Sonic the Comic, to be exact, theorised that's how Sonic and Robotnik came to be!

Basically Sonic was some brown ordinary hedgehog... as a result of some explosion, Sonic was born with the super powers. Robotnik was a good guy then as well, close friends with Sonic. But later, a similar explosion happened and resulted in the Robotnik we know today.
