NHK has a world stream that I was watching, I don't remember the link you can probably find it via google. I stopped watching as there wasn't really anything new other than quake warnings given.

Assuming no explosion spitting shit into the air, what's the worst-case for a meltdown? My understanding is that it would just melt completely through the containment into the earth yeah? What's the deadzone/radius/time on that kind of thing.

Isn't it hundreds or thousands of years? Worse that it's near the ocean and can get into the water and spread and be really dangerous?

Supposedly it can't melt through third containment. Dunno if you saw the article I posted a few pages back, but 1st containment fails at 2000 degrees ... 2nd containment fails at 3000 degrees ... and finally it falls down into third containment which seals into an airtight bubble that can contain the melted fuel indefinitely. Obviously third containment can handle way over 3000 degrees. In addition every day that goes by and every degree cooler we make it results in the odds of it getting over 3000 by a LOT. Eventually the secondary reactions will cease producing heat when they all run out in a few weeks.

Is there an uploaded version of w/e this video is you're talking about with the people running up the hill? None of the streams are showing it.

From what people have posted in this thread, it's completely impossible for it to melt down below its containment. A full meltdown will just have it fall down into some concrete that will 100% contain it.

The entire building is encased in a huge block of concrete that will not be melted by the fuel rods. So it can't be broken. Rods just melt and shits on top of the concrete.

I'm pretty sure the ONLY "worst case" "Chernobyl" possibility happens if actual radioactive material (and I think most of that has been dissipated, at least the hard-to-counter stuff) is in the middle of an explosion that gets past the containment (via the roof) and travels in the air.

They should just dig a huge pit below the reactor and drop inside it if it goes crazy! Problem solved.

But seriously, I'm curious how deep it would need to be to be considered "safe" at the surface.
