They are both accidents at a nuclear facility in the same way both Kilauea and Krakatoa are volcanos

This isn't possible, the amount and type of radioactive material released in three mile island would have never made it that far. There was fallout from Chernobyl that did make it to the UK though, perhaps he's convoluted the two.

    Either way, it's absurd fearmongering.

Increased microsievert or w/e readings detected up to 40km from the plant, though they still claim it's not enough to harm human health but they are checking people to make sure the stuff hasn't attached to clothing or been ingested because that could potentially get them sick.

Like I said, I was just passing it along. I don't know enough to make a judgment. And I'm not really following it.

Was watching BBC news yesterday evening, and some nuclear expert said there is no danger of radiation when the JP's brought in helicopters carrying water to cool down the reactor; because the rotor blades from the helicopter would be fanning away all the radioactive air away from the personnels anyway

    Now, on BBC news website.

They brought in helicopters today to try to douse and cool the reactor at the Fukushima plant, but they soon abandoned the attempt as there was too much radiation in the air above the site.
Totally contradicting. Did they just brought in a troll yesterday to give advice live on-air?

There would be radiation but it would be negligible from what I heard this morning on a special program on NHK. The real issue was how to get the water above without any real pressure through the hole in the roof, which is why they abandoned it. Not enough pressure.

If you have watch Chernobyl documentary because, a certain level of radiation could right away damage any machine, like the russia helicopter just collapse and break into pieces in mid air above the reactor. Furthermore, the japan self defense just mad on TEPCO because they try to hiding some serious issue when asking for help.

Even if the guy on the BBC was right, I personally wouldn't want the only barrier between me and possible exposure to radiation to be my propellers' thrust. Definitely doesn't sound like a reliable defence.

First time reading this thread today. Seems radiation has officially got into the air. How much and how far is still unknown. It seems to be a minimal amount, which is good to know.

TEPCO just says that they use the wrong conversion, which is the reason that they got the abnormal pressure reading in no.2 reactor. This just reminds me the metric mishap that results a launch failure by NASA...

It is, fuck yeah, and so are the news and a whole bunch of other stuff. I haven't been to YLE Areena in like two years, gave up on the cheap gits being as anal as BBC iPlayer about broadcasting programming abroad. Nice to see they're a bit more with it these days. :D

TEPCO Press event going on atm.

From what I understood, they're trying to build an aggregate to get the ECCS functioning again lol.

Wtf is a minimal amount? It's frustrating not actually knowing how bad things are with a subject like this. And don't even get me started on how people say "oh well theres this much radiation being detected, but it's still within the amount a person can have in a year with no harm". Fuck that noise, a years amount of "safe" radiation in a few hours? That can't be good for you.

I just wanted to pop in and remind everyone that 3-mile island had 0 casualties - and the thing about goat's milk being contaminated or whatever...

You know how they test if suspected counterfeit wine made pre-1940 is actually from that period?

It has less carbon-14 in it...because carbon-14 in the air was elevated by nuclear testing.

An full CT scan hits you with more radiation than you get in a year in a whole lot less than a few hours. See that chart above. Obviously most people don't get those, but it still doesn't mean the plant is that bad for you. Maybe if you had a few X-rays and a CT scan AND live near the plant you may wanna step back a bit.
