I think to be at 5 there has to already be deaths attributed to the radiation. Don't think it matters who though. But now that they'd admitted to it, I wonder what the response from the rest of the world is going to be. It's pretty irresponsible to hide shit like that, especially when the rest of the world is there waiting to help you out...

Kyodo News isn't reporting anything like that and their latest article was published later. Neither is IAEA or WNN. Either someone is misinformed to hell and back, or there has been a massive subversion of information.

The regulatory agencies (including the ones not in Japan) are all stating the rise in INES from 4 -> 5 was due to the level of damage incurred to the Units, not to radiation rise or deaths attributed to it.

By the way, we already knew that the radiation levels at the plant could kill people. The radiation levels between Units 3 and 4 are definitely high enough to kill someone if exposed for a decent length of time. But I've never seen any number higher than 400 mSv/hr reported by a regulatory agency.

Be waiting to see on this one. Misinformation or subversion, either way, not going to be a pretty outcome and the PR damage is still forthcoming no doubt.

Also they reported that power has been restored to units no.1 and no. 2, and edg's have been connected to units 5 and 6 spent fuel pools. I haven't been able to find out of the cooling systems are functional or if they've even tried to bring them online yet.

Sorry, but the news media is not helping the situation at all. Again and again someone branches out with this crap and unfortunately administrators breaking down and crying is just going to make the media gobble it all up even moreso than they were before. Right now, nothing I consider reliable has been published that would affirm any drastic change such as those articles are trying to exhibit, and until I see something along those lines I remain extremely skeptical.

Could they have been lying? Sure, it could have happened, but the sheer repercussions from that, especially in a scenario like this, would make even a daemon think twice before doing it. Until I see a report elsewise, I call bullshit. Especially given the information spread by MEXT showing uSv/hr distributions at km distance monitoring posts around the plants. All those agencies lying together in a concerted effort? Sorry, but I really have a hard time swallowing that. While it remains true that we don't have confirmation regarding a lot of parameters, what we do have is nothing like that report, which means it is either a misinformation or a subversion.

The response to that particular information only proves the PR damage that will be incurred from this, regardless of the actual outcome.

I don't think everyone should be in wtf mode, but damn, shit is pretty damn bad over there apparently. I would hope the media doesn't turn into "Panic mode /on" (even though this is the most likely outcome), or even "The guy is a quack, it isn't that bad, Honest!" (which is what I feel like a lot of people on the other side of the coin will be doing).

The guy gains nothing by breaking down and saying things are worse then they have been reporting. It's been said before that their top priority is to deal with the problem, not report on it. The lack of concrete evidence from the site doesn't mean much to me when one of the top executives in charge of the situation starts balling on national tv. Shit is more serious then they would have us believe, which is basically all he said. Now that they've admitted to that, will team world police step in? Or is it basically a wait and see game?

At some point I'd imagine some world leader somewhere would say "enough is enough" and do something other then letting everyone hold their collective breathe while japan figures out if they're gonna cut their losses or fight the good fight; because if shit hits the fan, a whole lot more places then just japan are screwed.

If the person who posted in 2ch during the critical moment is really the worker over there. He had talked about there is 470mSv/hr at some point. It is during the time where the self defense begins to retreat from the plant. Most of ppl in 2ch believe the info is true, since alots of info he given out in 2ch just reported shortly after that in the news. However, seems like there never been over 500mSv/hr yet

That publication does not 'validate' any of the common fears expressed thus far. Context is important. The high levels of radiation being discussed is only applicable to the workers handling the crisis. Any related deaths would be caused by radiation induced cancers in those workers at a much later point in time, and this will likely only occur with a select few of the workers anyway. It's not, by any means, a recent development or even a concept that eluded those whose opinion has been that the media is sensationalizing the incident. Also, the U.S. and perhaps other countries have already stepped up to the plate. Some industrial equipment has been/is being shipped to them to help. The next best we could do would be to simply supply more manpower. Day by day exposure on those levels worsens with each passing day and they're likely going to be working around that for another few weeks.

Now, not to say what those plant workers is doing isn't noble, but maybe consider even more context. What seems worse, a select few people out of the 150 workers dieing a few years earlier than otherwise due to premature cancer development, or 4000~5000 people that died from the tsunami, the 60,000+ homes that have been destroyed, and the hundreds of thousands of people that have been displaced?

Just because we talk a lot about one specific part of the tragedy in japan does not mean we forgot about everything else. That said, while there is no evidence to support that any one outside of those near the actual plants are in any real long term danger due to radiation, the situation does seem to be getting worse, or at the very least more complicated, with each passing day. That is the sole reason why so many people who don't buy into the sensationalism are still as concerned about it as they are now. To say otherwise is just well, that's why I bought up Homer simpson earlier...It's still good! It's still good!
