I've honestly never compared what gives more points at the end, if grabbing many rings or just rush as fast as possible.

if i have super sonic, I collect enough to activate, then i run on the path w/ most rings i can collect while pressing to the right and/or jumping.
if i don't have supersonic, collect rings for the chaos duder till i have ss

I also use a mix of rush and collect. The only exception is during Stardust Speedway in Sonic CD (JP Ver.) I just sit in the zone and listen to the music until the clock hits 9:59 and do it again.

Do it as fast as possible while collecting as many rings as possible, which gets the highest score. The fuck.
