For example, In her case, she would gain traffic from people watching that video and wondering what the original content was because the video was so fucking awful. People that would otherwise have never heard of her.

Believe me, she would have nothing to gain from the publicity. If anything, these unknown Dutch retards had everything to gain. She's well-known in her industry, these random hacks are not. If something goes down, who has the larger following to leech exposure via retweets, facebook posts, etc?

Take a children's book written and illustrated by Charlie Harper or something. Then, some random hack shit kid decides to re-illustrate the entire book, crediting Charlie Harper for the words, but all the artwork is his own utter shit, to post on his website for self-promotion. That is unlawful un-permissed usage and re-displaying of Charlie Harper's intellectual property (not plagiarism because it was credited), and only the crappy nobody has anything to gain from the stirring of the shit. This usage has potential for diluting the impact of Charlie Harper's book if people come across both the real one and the "ruined" one and are unaware of which is legit.

If you're a nobody, yeah, bad publicity can be good publicity... but rarely since you're damaging your reputation within the surprisingly small industry community, which is where any high-profile work will come from, not individual clients. Especially when you infringe on the rights of a well known, well-established, well-liked individual. Yeah, you'll get the attention of random small-business idiots who don't know your shit sucks. You'll also be red-flagging yourself for any real work.

Obviously this doesn't apply to all industries, but in the visual arts, reputation goes a long ways.


Either way, it's just absurd that people think that the internet needs to remain their untouchable black market and that you should shrug off any piracy as a compliment or free publicity. There are lines and boundaries to be discussed instead of creating excuses for theft.

I have a 2 blu ray disc account with netflix. I pay for my net, I even DL some songs off Itunes when I cant find HQ online. I Went out and bought drakes last album in the store. I bought a record when I went to a concert.

I Watch TV online, DLed a fucking ton of cooking shows the last few months when I got into cooking, but at the same time I do have a DVR box.

Am I guilty of DLing a lot of music for free? Yes I am lol I steal a lot when I think of it... but I give them a ton of money too. So I dont feel bad really, the same way I dont give a crap when I root my Phone, or when I DL some for free. I have at least $75 in DLed apps, but I have stolen a few lol. Phone my PC and a few other big price ones add up fast...

What im getting at is ya, we do DL a lot for free. But not everything, and a lot of us pay for a ton of shit too.

While I almost entirely agree with Notch on the subject and he makes a lot of good points...

Large parts of the culture these days exists in a world where copies are free. Copying a physical book costs money, but copying a digital movie is free. In fact, simply moving a movie from one hard drive to another actually copies the movie first, then deletes the original. Copying games is also free. No resources are lost, nobody loses any money, and more people are having fun.

To people who want to get paid for their digital works, myself included, that is a bit of a problem. All of society and economics is based on an old outdated model where giving something to someone would rid the original owner of their copy, so everyone who wanted a copy had to buy one from someone else who would lose theirs, and the only source of new copies was you. There might be actual development costs involved in making these copies. For example, for every wheel in the market, someone had to make that wheel. With digital copies, you only need to make the wheel once.

I won’t bother analyzing why people copy games and other digital media, as that’s really a moot point. We’ve got an amazingly effective way of distributing culture that is extremely beneficial for humanity, but it clashes with our current economical models. Piracy will win in the long run. It has to. The alternative is too scary.

The thing is, the "scary alternative" sounds more likely to happen than letting the internet go unchecked as a trading post of infinite free products, as his personal answer to Minecraft piracy is to offer online content that can't be pirated. Not all products can offer this like video games can. Non-interactive digital entertainment does not have the luxury to offer alternate content for legitimate buyers.

What can they do? The movie industry likes to think they need to increase ticket prices to make up for what they are "losing" through piracy and potential customers not showing up to the theatres. What would happen if they dropped their prices? Would attendance increase? Would it simply even itself out with the lower profits and higher attendance? They sure are trying to create as much "online content" as they can via 3D, vibrating seats, etc. but it's all gimmick and people are catching on.

And actually, give someone all the essentials: Food, water, shelter, sanitation, etc. but deny them anything else. Oh, that's pretty much solitary confinement, and in the long term it drives the majority of people out of their damned minds. We are NOT a subsistence society anymore, entertainment is pretty fucking mandatory these days.

And where, exactly, did I blame Hollywood for my lack of work? I discussed housing prices and income disparity, though to be fair Hollywood is a GREAT example of money concentrated at the top. Didn't you mention once that your man worked in the industry (or was that a someone else with a purple name)? Tell me you would not be happier if even a fraction of the money that currently is above the line got paid to those who worked below it.
