Yeah, I have a hard time stomaching their president, too. Though, I can't say I really dug Tusk as Frank's antagonist this go around, either. About as endearing as a pile of money, which is basically what he represents.

They seemed to overdo his weakness quite a bit. Every flaw they needed him to express was too over-the-top and not concealed well at all for any reason. That was definitely a weak point for me. It was more in writing than acting but the actor doesn't help.

He could have been a great antagonist, and the actor I liked - but the way it was written, he was just kind of an annoyance for Frank, and another pawn to be worked around. I think there needed to be a stronger "showdown", I think I wanted to see more Tusk power plays. He cut off electricity at one point but we never saw the effects of it. Woulda been cooler if he did it to Frank's neighborhood or something.

End of the day it's the Spacey show + some Wright. In fact, a lot of the supporting cast is pretty weak.

Remy got turned into a bit of a bitch this season for example, which bothered me.

Lukas decided to go full retard and never even stopped to think he might need a cooler head to handle the situation.

Doug turns into a complete creeper for no apparent reason - he was a little creepy but this was just cringey.

I think Jackie Short seems like a straight-man right now, in some ways. Would have liked to see her deal more with the shit she did to Ted (?) the dude with the illegitimate kid, also wish the Jackie + Remy shit wasn't so trite.

Still love it, but some things just starting to sink in

I watched the first episode but that it is. The shows are actually very similar, at least from the first episode, so that is all I watched.

Haven't seen the US show (I keep dithering over subbing to netflix just to watch through it all) but the UK show ranks as one of my all-time fave TV series ever... even though they buggered about with the ending of the first of the books for it.

Also, if anyone is going through withdrawal waiting for season 3, there's no reason to not watch at least the first 2 BBC series; the first ends roughly where the US show got to in season 2 and the second one involves the King of England.

The UK version is amazing as well and every bit as visceral as this updated take on the show. Don't watch the 3rd season of it if you don't want to be spoiled on season 3 of the US version, however.

It seems that House of Cards‘ main character Frank Underwood – played by Kevin Spacey – isn’t the only person willing to scheme to get his way politically. Apparently, so are the producers of the hit Netflix series.

Many movies and TV shows filming throughout the country rely on tax benefits in the form of tax credits, exemptions, cash grants and fee-free locations to help fund their productions. These incentives are offered on a state-by-state basis, and oftentimes they mean the difference between a production deciding to film in one location or another.

This is the problem currently befalling House of Cards season 3, which was scheduled to begin production this spring but has now been pushed back to mid-June pending the outcome of two separate bills in the Maryland Legislature. Media Rights Capital, which produces the series, received more than $11 million in Maryland tax credits for season 1 and are on track to receive $15 million for season 2, an amount they were also hoping to get for season 3. That tax credit is currently impossible, however, unless Maryland passes either of two bills required to raise the cap again from $7.5 million, where it was before House of Cards arrived, to $11 million or $18.5 million.

In a letter sent a few weeks ago, MRC pleaded with several politicians to make the right choice, otherwise production would be forced to move to another state:

We wanted you to be aware that while we had planned to begin filming in early spring, we have decided to push back the start date for filming until June to ensure there has been a positive outcome of the legislation. In the event sufficient incentives do not become available, we will have to break down our stage, sets and offices and set up in another state.

On the one hand, the Washington Post says economic development officials reported that House of Cards created nearly 6,000 jobs and poured more than $250 million into the state’s economy since its arrival. Still, many argue those jobs weren’t created for in-state cast and crew members, but more likely the result of out-of-state talent moving in to work on the show. Even if it were true, in-state jobs are only short-term and would no longer be profitable once the show ceases production.

On the other hand, the state delegates argue, how much more will they have to give? Del. Eric G. Luedtke (D-Montgomery), who until now has supported film tax credits, asked economic development officials at a hearing on the issue last Friday, “This just keeps getting bigger and bigger. And my question is: When does it stop?” Del. C. William Frick (D-Montgomery) concurred, saying, “It sounds like you are suggesting that they wouldn’t film Season 3 here after we’ve given them $31 million already. Is it possible that they would just leave after we gave them $31 million?”

If the show, in fact, decides to leave Maryland for greener money-filled pastures, it’s said that Virginia lawmakers are currently looking to increase their tax credit cap to $12.5 million. If not Virginia, then North Carolina would be another good choice for replicating the look and feel of the Capitol, seeing as Washington, D.C. currently offers no tax credits. Summing up how Maryland feels about the issue, Del. Mark N. Fisher (R-Calvert) said it best, “We’re almost being held for ransom.” Indeed.

Overall still good imo. Not into politics whatsoever but I enjoy pretty much anything Kevin Spacey is involved in.

I figured he'd get that Underwood wood sooner or later. Frank doesn't keep people around for too long unless he plans on using them. We knew Frank had some gay tendencies from the episode in S1 where he got hammered with his school buddies and had a Brokeback moment. Since he's been in Congressional leadership and then VP, he can't fuck around without the whole world knowing. So who better to have an affair with than the guy sworn to secrecy who worships you?

I really hope he comes back to work for Frank. The two of them together would be unstoppable. Also was disappoint we didn't get to see him give Jackie the business. Also not sure why he would be blacklisted at other lobbying firms, but whatevs.

UGH YOU FUCKING STUPID FUCK. Tragic flaw to keep Rachel alive. And yeah just having her read to you is weird as fuck. I have a feeling the main thrust of S3 is going to be when the cops pick Rachel up in Stamper's car and Hammerschmidt starts putting shit together from Lucas's story.

I really felt bad for him. Just another cautionary tale about how trying to do the right thing gets you completely fucked. Also loved the end of the scene at his place where he told Frank they weren't friends. Good for you Freddy.

I'm suspicious of his character as a whole. With how outlandish some of the shit in this show can be, I hope it doesn't turn into a Die Hard 4, "HACK ALL INTERNETS!!!!11" kinda thing.

It was interesting for a while but I feel like the struggle between Tusk and Frank lingered waaaayyy too long. Listen, Major Dad, I know you hate Frank but shutting the power off in a major metropolitan area is pretty fucked up. I did like how he flipped in the Congressional hearing when he realized Walker was finished, though. I wonder if Frank's gonna pardon him or let him rot in jail.

Anyway I still love the show, even if it's getting pretty unbelievable. This plus True Detective have helped me bridge the last few months until GoT.
