Re5ident Evil: Retribution (September 14, 2012)

Saw the movie this afternoon, my thoughts on it(spoilers):

I always consider myself the queen of people who can turn their brains off and enjoy a movie. Provided the CGI is good and there's a decent composer behind the music, I can enjoy most things. I even enjoy most Michael Bay movies(though I am NOT happy he will be doing a Ninja Turtles movie.) I wouldn't nominate them for any awards, but he tends to hire Steve Jablonsky to write the musical score for his movies, and the CGI is always really good.


Gonna start with something good about the movie:

The CGI was really well done. The sets were good. Leon's and Ada's outfits were well done. The fight sequences were good, I especially liked the Tokyo fight scene near the start of the movie. Milla kicks ass really well.

I did like having some of the previous actors from the first couple of RE movies make a return.

Best part of the movie? Ada denying Leon's advances.

That's really all I have to say that is nice about the movie.


Now for the gripes. Where to start? I tried shutting my brain off, I really did. I don't think it worked.

The plot. So horrible. So far-fetched and ridiculous. Why did Umbrella bring back the homicidal red queen program that they sent a team to disable in movie 1, and have it run the underwater facility in this one? How did Umbrella possibly make enough off the sale of the T-virus to offset the cost of the underwater facility and the experiments within? Why is Wesker good now? I must have missed something... was the Wesker that Alice fought on the ship a clone? Why is he not dead and why does he care about the human population? Why doesn't Wesker, the former head of Umbrella, know that the underwater facility is capable of "making" humans and try to take over the facility and use it to increase the human population a bit?

Leon and Ada: I think Ada was only added for fan service-y reasons. The panty-shot confirmed this. Leon from the neck up kept making me think of Sawyer from Lost. I don't think either one of their personalities remotely resembled their video game counterparts.

What the fuck happened to Claire and Chris from the previous movie? They were on the ship. The ship got attacked. Claire and Chris are magically gone. I would have been ok with Mr Anderson killing them off, or showing them get captured. Maybe he couldn't get the actors to sign off on being a part of the new RE movie. Fine. At least explain what happened to them. Have Jill tell Alice they were captured, or killed. Something. Stop writing RE game characters into the story and then dropping them without explanation.

What was with the super-sized Licker?

Why wasn't there a reference to Kaplan and J.D. from Rain's little re-created team?

Why did the real, main Alice suddenly know sign language?

The "background music" was terrible. I'd rather call it "noise". Would it have been so hard to get a composer to kind of re-use the score from movie 1 and change it up a little?

There weren't enough zombies. There's too much focus on the Las Plagas and the special infected. Why are the zombies so much faster than the zombies from 1?

What was with the pyramid of swimming zombies? And why do the zombies suddenly become interested in eating their own kind(the Las Plagas Rain)? That's the first time we've seen a T-virus infected of any kind attack another T-virus infected(discounting Alice/Angela, of course).

The ending... ugh.


I think Paul W.S. Anderson is now my Michael Bay.

Thank God that Damnation is out on the 25th.

Only saving grace: Ada and Jill were pretty hot....that is all...

I really enjoyed this movie, they did a great job. The story wasn't the greatest but its a damn action movie and it fulfilled that role perfectly. Only part I didn't like was the ending where

Jill throws Alice the gun to shoot the ice under Rain, it shoulda been Ada since she was always the one to throw rocket launchers and crap to finish off a boss lol

I think that's a new record, they offed Michelle Rodriguez TWICE, in ONE movie. Three for the series.

I want to punch that orange vest wearing asshat right in his throat after hearing him laugh for three minutes straight. I don't even know why I kept watching as my rage grew with each second, but I couldn't power down the hate for him and was forced to let it build to murderous levels. I do not thank you Gywn..... That's a whole lotta mad about people not agreeing with your opinion on a movie. I'll probably find some free way of watching this and still regret it... (Without ever reading a review)

Good I'm glad you can join on the bandwagon and hate something because its popular I guess? I guess the simple action films in the past were the bestest ever but something like this movie is a sin. All these people who look to those guys in that video as if their words were sacred, make me laugh. They just remind me of these sad idiots that think they know how the movie should go yet couldn't write a script worth a damn if they were asked to prove it ahahaha.

No, I'm going to hate it if I don't like it. It's a pretty simple concept and not something that has to be dominated by group think. I've hated pretty much every one of the movies but watch them simply because I loved the games; I think it's a fair assumption that I can guess I'll dislike this one without consulting a review or users on this board. In fact, this is the first time I've even checked this thread.
