I think we're giving people way too many equal rights.
Kids shouldn't be beaten by their parents, but this 'treating them like they're adults' bullshit is going a bit too far. They're children. They need to be taught lessons, slapped, disciplined, and guided so that they can become valuable members of society.
Not saying she needed to be punched in the face, but if she really did punch her father she's already too out of control and probably needed a good slap.
wow hitting your child is illegal, next you'll tell me i can't spray my cat with water when he misbehaves and i can't gut a hooker when she gives me the herp
I think that the issue with beating your kids is that:
1. It's really easy to go overboard
2. It's fairly difficult not to be mad when you hit them because more than likely you'll want to hit them when you are mad
Nothing wrong with putting a kid over your knee and giving them the business when they want to act up. I personally go a different route with children, you don't -have- to beat them to break them but it helps. I personally prefer making them stand in corners with their arms up for 5-10 minutes, pending the crime D:
Kids really need to learn about being punished...I've seen groups of kids get arrested by cops, wound up having the parents called in, and the kids start telling the parents "fuck you"...its pathetic.
Pretty much this, most parents are not responsible in the sense of even punishing their kids, and then the rest can't even punish properly. I love the parents I see in Gamestop sometimes who have a kid demanding their parent buy them the newest God of War/GTA bloodfest game (the kid being like 13 or so) and the parents do it.
Maybe those are just the parents who realize that a game is just a game.
Though, on the subject of proper discipline, it's a lot harder on some parents than others. Both parenting skills and peer pressure play huge roles on a kid's life. If you live in an area where your kid's most likely friends are just going to get him into trouble and turn him against authority, then you have a hell of a challenge to keep them straight without seeming overprotective or making them feel like they can't have friends.
Kids don't act up purely as a result of lack of discipline. It's what they learn from other kids, too. And the more you do try to discipline, the more their view that authority sucks is reinforced and the more they hate you for it. It's not always a matter of simply saying no or being unafraid to spank your child. You have to make your child respect you more than their friends. Respect, not fear. That's the challenge.
So start early. You have about six years to build up that respect before they go to school and it's put to the test.
Some things just vary from kid to kid also, which brings a whole new level of difficulty for the parent. Some kids, no matter the influence by the neighborhood kids and authority, just know that acting a certain way gets them nothing in the end and other kids just don't care what other people think of the way that they're acting, like this Jessi Slaughter kid.
I can say that this is true with the way my brother and I grew up, around the same authority, the same influences, the same types of idiots and the same types of good people. I've been doing just fine while he's been getting into problems in every school that he's been going to. Sometimes, kids are just fueled to do things their way no matter the consequence. Some call it gutsy, some call is individuality which can be the case in some situations, but it usually comes down to ignorance.
But back on the topic, Jessi probably deserved to be disciplined yes, hit in the mouth, maybe, busted until she bled, no.
Like it has been previously said, parents need to know what the hell they are doing just as much as the kid.
You are a very unlikeable poster.
so you would not put him on your wall you say?
I would not put him on my wall, i say
Every one of you in this thread that thinks hitting your children is a healthy form of discipline are grossly mistaken, and just as bad as these "lazy parents" that you're complaining about. The problem with actually disciplining children is that it takes quite a bit of effort, and is generally a huge inconvenience, and frankly at a time when both parents are working 40+ hours a week, who has the time? Hitting a child only takes a second, and it models the behavior that when someone disappoints, upsets, or angers you, the appropriate response is to hurt them. Corporal punishment is lazy discipline at best.
