Asus makes some good boards just make sure you do some reading before you purchase. I have 2 ASUS Z97 Maximus VII Hero mainly because original one had a known issue with DIMM slots.

Wasn't aware it was actually a big issue till I dove in more after adding 4 total ram slots.. Than it reared its ugly head.

And As I seen someone post something about Evga.

I have had Many graphics cards... and only one had to be RMA'd.

    Owned:
    250 GTS 512MB
    250 GTS 512MB (RMA'd)
250 GTS 512MB Replacement for RMA

465 GTX (Stepped up to 560 GTX TI)
    560 GTX Ti

    660 GTX Ti

    970 GTX FTW
    970 GTX FTW

Service has been amazing.. 24/7 if you need it. RMA was a flash

I also have one of there motherboards. P55 SLI E655. still ran when I upgraded to the Z97 platform in oct 2014. Paired with an i5 760 @ 4.0GHz

Been trying to talk myself into a 970 but with new cards coming out (soonish?) I was holding off. Just saw this card on sale and it comes with witcher 3 and arkham knight for $310 after rebate. Given those freebies and how much they might drop does it seem like this is a good deal I should probably jump on?

When you install 2 hard drives, like a solid state drive and a regular hard drive, how make one the main and the other backup and how do you make sure future programs get installed on the backup hard drive not the solid state drive.

Assuming you're coming from a wiped computer, you'll designate one of the drives (most likely the SSD) as the primary boot drive in your BIOS, then install Windows there.

Programs will default install to the same drive as the OS, if you want to put programs on other drives you'll have to manually designate it each time. Alternatively in a program like Steam you can set a directory to be the location for all your games, and go from there (on my computer I have a second SSD solely for games, and Origin/Steam etc all install there by default)

That is definitely a nice deal if you're dead set on the 970. The best offer on a 290x is the Sapphire Tri-X OC with free Dirt Rally for $270 after rebate. $40 difference with close performance, but the 970 has more attractive games and you get the back plate. Either gpu should max darn near anything at 1080p on Ultra at 60fps. At 1440p I've ran a 970 and am currently running a 290x and both have performed incredibly. It's all about how much you want to spend and if you're dead set on a certain manufacturer.

Krandor already gave an excellent description on what to do. Just make sure whenever you install a program you're directing it to the drive of your choosing. I use three drives and I just watch where I put what. Shortcuts on the desktop make things easy.

So wipe the hard drive, install new hard drive, power on hold delete to enter BIOS, designate new SSD as Primary boot drive. OK got it, Thanks.

I currently have a Hyper 212 EVO cpu fan, would any of the corsair water cooler systems make a noticeable difference in cooling for overclocking?

I went from a 212 Plus to a Corsair H60 and I didn't notice much difference. Not a regret, but it wasn't needed. I'd do the 100 line.

Dual/Triple fan radiators will usually work better then air, but single fan ones usually aren't worth the price imo (speaking in comparison to readily available and cheap 212 EVO). I use a Coolermaster Nepton 240M in my rig and it's great, though I admittedly did sacrifice some noise/performance to pair it up with some LED fans.

Pfft get a noctua dh14 instead of little water.

Big air > little water, obviously big water > big air. Nice thing about big air is it doesn't get louder like a lot of water can. Every time I see a rad outside a box with 20 little fans I cringe.

For a full critique, a specific breakdown of all parts would help greatly. Using pcpartpicker.com and listing what you have for a complete build is an easy way to do it.

Well, from I can gather you have an Athlon II 6 core, a MSI board, 14gb ddr3, and a 6900 gpu. Being able to see what you have regarding case, psu, fans, storage, and accessories would help in determining where money should be prioritized.

Here you go, not sure if you guys can see it. Seems like too much information though.

Bah guess i'm an idiot, Thought it would put it up on a cloud like webpage for others to see.

Warning, a bit of information, I deleted what i thought was just useless information like USB ports and the like, Also i am using a water cooling system that i long forgot the name of. Works great and never hear any noise.

    Sorry for the trouble.

I will keep an eye out for deals on the 290x as my computer primarily runs on amd. Thank you for the advice and for looking into it.

my shitty old laptop is going to die soon and i can get a zero-interest loan through my work for a new computer, so i have decided i am going to build a pc. the last time i built one was in preparation for doom 3. accordingly, i have no idea what i'm doing anymore (e.g., would stock cooling gear that comes with the CPU/case be sufficient? is the PSU sufficient for the estimated wattage?). i've cobbled together a list of stuff, if anyone could point out any glaring deficiencies or suggest some improvements that keep it inside the current budget ($1200) i would appreciate it!

So I'm gearing up to build a rig. It will be my first time from the ground up, but I will have assistance with the installation. My situation is trying to find a suitable medium for high-end gaming while also using it for 3D modeling purposes (AutoDesk, Rhino, etc).

I went through my first iteration of parts below. The GPU may flip around depending on deals but that's the one I chose for now. I'd also like your opinions on M.2 vs SSD storage - I want to primarily have my OS and 3D programs on the SSD while my bulk data goes to an HDD (I'm sacrificing QOL/speed for $ and storage capacity - I'm already teetering near 500gb with just movies/games alone).
