How about an ASUS gl771j?
On newegg, there has been a spat of negative reviews for the GL771JM model in regards to a bad graphics card.
Any card has the chance to do it, its just luck if you don't get coil whine or not. I got lucky with my 980 ti and it doesn't coil whine even at 100% usage on FFXIV while overclocked.
As for the 60fps thing, it all depends on what games you play.. if you will get 60 fps or not. For FFXIV, it will be for the most part 60fps at 4K (its what i mostly play).
Speaking of monitors for 4K, I started a thread below for monitor choices, but it ended up mostly to G-sync 4K monitors mainly due to the fact that yes, there are times your game won't be 60fps.. and that can cause tearing... which can be evil ;/
I'm not laptop savvy, but I too am a MSI>Asus person, even if my mobo and both gpu are Asus (they were cheap!).
If you're getting a 17" model MSI is good, but unless something has changed in their recent models the 15" versions typically share a heatpipe for the CPU and GPU, which leads to an incredibly hot laptop.
Amd didn't give many hard numbers, but the new line they've just announced looks amazing. The absolute top of the line card (single GPU) they announced, the R9 Fury X, is $649 and they claim 4k 60 fps gaming.

The Fury X is water cooled, and the air cooled version (Fury) is $549. The Fury is also paired with a 550 watt rated cooler for a card with a TDP of 275, will likely be running under full load around mid 50cFury X 4096 SP's, 50% more than 290X. 8.6 Teraflops. 8.9 billion transistors.
How long before we get to see comparisons between it and a titan/ti?
Edit: Also, their HBM sticks sound interesting:

Edit2: Unconfirmed comparison, popped up on reddit:

AMD Beijing conference with far cry 4 game performance for fury x
Spoiler: show
curious to see to, because they don't list the CPU used in those tests, they don't list if its showing max or average fps in those tests (like why is there a 5fps difference in titan X in the same Far Cry 4 4K test...?)
Wonder how it handles things when a game + system uses over 4GB also O_o
Pretty sure they using the HBM sticks also, might be throwing off my base know-how.
I had read there isn't a DVI connection so those of us with QNIX QX2710 and/or other monitors may have issues.
My hope is that if anything, it will make Nvidia drop their prices.
I just cant fathom putting AMD in my machine.
If I don't plan to go 4k is there a gaming need to go to a 980?
For 1440p maybe, 290x/970 is more then enough for 1080p.
Could also take a look at AMD's new lineup that dropped this week. It's mostly slightly overclocked rebrands in the first wave, but the new Fiji architecture Fury line will be out soon.
^
my 970 is good for 1440p, but newer games have me turning down some options. If you want better than 970, might as well get 980ti or AMD fury if you are into AMD
For anyone interested, benchmarks for AMD's new Fury X are now available, and it's basically identical to the 980ti across the board. It remains to be seen if new drivers can improve anything, but atm it's not the best look for AMD.
HardOCP's review of the Fury X was pretty damning. If Fury X was $500-$550, it would be solid.
