That's great news, Gokulo. I miss that about other MMOs, even XI. It was fun just running up and nuking a mob without the painful process of having to hold up a rod.

I don't disagree with that statement, I doubt anyone with a brain would. That's not the point, though.
Um..... no.
No one designs a game intentionally to be bad (even ironically), so the choice to use brand identity has nothing to do with the actual game or how it is developed or the end result. Have you ever considered the decision to use brand identity one to be made before the game has even entered production?
"Oh, the game sucks, let's use brand identity to cover the turd!"
Get real.
Hey, just asking. You never know.
Of course it was, that doesn't excuse it being a piece of shit. They're not some unknown struggling developer that's never made an MMO before. They're a huge, experienced, well known, critically acclaimed corporation and should have made an effort to release a decent game.
Do you think they looked at the release version of the game and thought "Oh, this game is totally great, let's charge $60 + monthly fees for it!"
I said ages ago that FFXIV is extremely educational and I'd stick around to watch just because I've never seen developers publicly scramble so much to salvage something lol. Shit like that happens internally all the time, but it sure is something when the whole world can see it.
When you title a numbered FF and promote the fuck out of it you don't release a steaming pile and hope the brand name salvages it.
The fact that the game sucked didn't sneak up on them, they knew it was terrible but they went ahead and released it anyway.
Don't get me wrong, I like change, I like innovation but when you change too much people get mad. I believe we were all XI fans at some point in time, we were expecting a better version of XI where the mistakes and limitations that plagued XI were done away with while being combined with modern ideas.
I was not expecting XI-2, I was expecting them to take things they learned in XI and put a modern spin on it, build on the lessons learned from XI.
I'm pretty sure Tanaka probably just assumed he could get away with it since FFXI at launch wasn't much different. I'm fairly confident he still doesn't have a solid grasp of the competition in mmo's nowadays, and probably also thinks hardcore ffxi players, who constantly tolerate his bs are representative of the entire mmo market. If you think about how FFXI was run, and is just now starting to put in some effort as far as listening to the community, it's not that surprising that they thought they could release a game in that state.
I think this is the most accurate statement. The game was made by bunch of people who spent ton of time designing a games but not actually playing whats around. Standards changed, people changed, expectations changed, but the team hasn't really. There's probably tons of guys who work 10-14 hours a day for SE and have no time for anything else. I think the whole company been just preoccupied with cranking out another hit that they forgot to look around whats going on in the world of games. Unfortunately this seems pretty evident not only in XIV but their other titles.
If they let us cast spells without going into active mode (assuming they mean cures and buffs?) how are they going to handle the mp regen when passive but not active? A healer would never have to go active, allowing them support the party while maintaining a constant refresh effect.
Just make it so you don't start regenerating until you haven't cast any spells for X seconds.
As it is you don't get the more potent regeneration until you're standing still for a certain amount of time.
Just do it like other games and have it so you have to stay out of combat for a few seconds (either through the mob dying, you dropping aggro/engage, or simply running the fuck away for awhile) and you regen. They've been taking from other games lately; no reason to stop now.
Obviously adding resting is out of the question now so few second waiting is the most logical solution.
Please mr. Producer, gimme letter XVI
I think we'll get it the same day the gigantic 1.18a shakes the world around us.
Just gonna go ahead and say I'm impressed with the changes that SE has made so far, and for myself the game is actually playable right now. Sure it has a long way to go, but coming from the state that the retard Tonka released it in, it's a big change. Not sure I'd pay money to play it as it is now though, it still seems to lack purpose.
Good, bad, or indifferent, the Armory system is going to be a defining trait of FFXIV. And in the abstract, being able to change job at any time is a pretty cool concept.
But yeah, it leaves the obvious flaw of "what happens if I take my weapon off?". I guess it was easier to just prevent that eventuality than implement an entire no-class class to cover the eventuality of someone trying to wander around without a weapon on (which some asshole would inevitably level to 50 for the lulz).
I almost wish they hadn't taken the time to be able to hide weapons, the nerdrage on the official forums after swimsuits drop would be hilarious.
That could've been part of the heavy-handed spell cost rebalancing for cures. If they just left MP regenerating at all times while in passive mode, the xbawks hueg MP costs for curing would make sense.
With how heavy-handed every change to battle has been, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some truth to that, but there aren't words to describe the scale of moron-itity on the part of the battle team if that is, in fact, the case.
