The game would probably do well by merging at least some of the servers at this point. I started a couple days ago and it feels like the population of the AFK/walking dead. The community is pretty dead for new players right now. At least increasing the population per server would give a decent shot at finding another active person within a 30 ft. radius.

    So, uhh

It seems items will be made directly purchasable from the search screen in 1.20.

People who have played so far will take advantage of newbies wether they have to start fresh or not. Do you think a crafter with 2 years of experience in this game starting from scratch will not have an advantage over new people? Do you wanna punish players who have been playing this whole time by not allowing them to play with friends that may want to start when 2.0 is released?
Gil is not the problem. If it was we'd have to reset everyone's money every single time someone new joined. You knew the game was free and you decided to skip/wait. Your fault.
Thank fucking god someone else is beating the same drum as I am, new server doesn't mean jack shit. There are people with all craft classes to 50, they know the best recipe's to grind, the best places to farm the mobs to get the materials and more than likely would be jumping at the bit to go own a new market on a new server in a heartbeat. Did anyone not learn anything from when SE opened up Remora and Hades servers in FFXI? "Oh fresh servers to bring our HNM LS's to! we can have less competition!" then you find out 50-60+ endgame LS's all had the same idea and then it was just a clusterfuck. How about when SE let server transfers happen and entire guilds went to the backwater servers, again, everyone else had the same idea and it was just a clusterfuck. There is nothing stopping anyone from using two years worth of knowledge to reroll on x-y new server to dominate it.

Well at least they would have the same chance as everyone else just starting who can read wiki's and such. Just don't let anyone transfer to new servers.

One step closer to an auction house. Shoulda been done sooner imo. But they're also adding an auction house in 2.0. XD

Well ya, I've been saying this all along. Wtf do we need an "AH" for when they can basically do this to the current item search? We basically have what could be considered a clumsy AH as it is.

Player search making its way to 1.20 too it seems.

Meh it'll be fine I feel. We'll have Rolanberry Fields with item search (fucking plus) and a menu for it alongside what would hopefully be a full blown Auction House with item bidding, auction timers, etc. They just gotta make incentives/deterrents to keep both not just alive but functional in their own way.

Auction House could have heavier taxes on sold items than Market Wards. Auction House would be more for finished/major items and Market Wards could be used for mats/consumables.

The two can coexist and supplement each other.

Tbh, I can't say I have any fucking clue whats gonna happen to the game as a whole in 2.0. It's like I can't assume anything based on the current build anymore. I dare you to look at that list they provided for 2.0 roadmap and try to find an item in the game currently that they're not going to be basically revamp behind the scenes.

That is one of the reasons why I'm on the fence. It's practically a new game that they're making/have been working on. It's almost like stuff they are adding now is basically extra work, to keep a small group of people happy (current players), because they gotta do it over for the new server/hardware/engine/etc.

I understand that taking down the servers for a bit would be a really bad thing PR-wise but fuck...

Also the killer is that we will essentially not have those nice things till 2.0. I'm talking party search, loot distribution system, ls management. That's all being worked on in the back end for V2.0. Only thing they will keep adding is content while leaving core systems either halfassed (loot distribution) or non-existent (ls management)... pretty much like they've been doing all year.

Perfect examples are Darkhold and now Ifrit. Look at the list of of things coming in 2.0 and tell me you don't see something you would really love to have NOW to better enjoy this new content.

    I'm talking party search
Thats coming in 1.20 if I'm reading Yoshida's wall o' text #23677 correctly.

However, you raise a point I was about to make. We don't know how much of the stuff they have been working on and will be working on in 1.0 will make it over, and what will be left behind. The only guaranteed content left behind will be the "live" content in 1.19-1.23. Then we can also assume quite a few art assets will move over. But either way, stuff like buying from item search and party search will still make it into 1.0. Whether they can use the code and assets in 2.0 will be left to be seen.

I hope its not as much of an extra work as I'd assume firsthand, but we'll see what happens.

Oh word? That's great to hear. I would like to exp right now or do a Darkhold run with some folks but if they're not shouting in Ul'Dah that is unfortunately not going to happen. 1.20 is also the time where payment starts (I got a month of crysta I bought at retail) so if they deliver I may just see how it turns out.

All that aside... It's absolutely unheard of that the code/server/hardware/engine for this current build is so bad that they decided to basically start from scratch. Remember all those times when we would ask for something that doesn't sound that outlandish or extravagant on the forums and they would respond with "server difficulties". It coulda been something so minute like removing YOUR name from the screen and not all characters. Sorry can't do that due to "server difficulties"... That phrase was starting to become the new "PS2 limitations" except it was scarier because this is for a PC game.

What I'm saying is that it was a tough choice and I support the move and wish them the best of luck.

Guess now we know why there was a new person added to the team in December under the title of "Next-Gen Engine Developer" or something similar.

Yoshihisa Hashimoto, who basically led the development of Luminous Engine before coming to work on XIV. He's the technical advisor now.. I think the engine is in good hands. Also although they can implement dx11 support later if they want to i hope it'll be in the initial build... tesselation /drool

lol, other fun fact: daisuke sase (SSR, PW dev) is the monster planner!

Yeah. I submitted that question for the interview on Monday. Hopefully it'll get answered. It would be a huge mistake for them to avoid DX10/11 with a brand new engine.

I think DX10/11 might complicate the PS3 port?

In any case, as someone that's still rocking XP (and intends on migrating to Linux/Wine to play XIV), I would be sad if they moved to DX10+, but they have to do what they need to.

Every DX11 game I've played has had a simple toggle to run in DX9 mode. I don't pretend to know the programming, but it should be possible without too much hassle.

They can still support DX9. A lot of games allow for support of all three so they can run smoothly on a broad range of computers. DX10/11 for the nice high-end PCs running Vista/7 and DX9 for crappy PCs or people who are still using XP for whatever reason..

I don't think the PS3 supports directx. It's openGL iirc. They probably wouldn't want to go that route.

Grey is correct I think. DirectX is exclusive to Microsoft and you won't find its library on the PS3 at all. Xbox doesn't use OpenGL either, even if the library can be found on any pc.

I'm not exactly what is the usual process to convert a game from one platform to another, but they either have to use another layer of code between the library and the program, or build an engine that only use some of the most basic functions that can easily be converted.

In ffxiv case, the game is built using their own engine, so the odd is that it's relatively independant from openGL or directX library.
