Haha.
Wait a minute.. I don't have time to sift through the thread but did you nigs see this badassery!?
I came buckets. That made me wanna level PUG. Holy shit. lol
All it proves to me is that he's played FFXI, which is how mage works in that game. I don't know too many other MMOs where mages are doing sleep > nuke >> sleep >> nuke.
Replace sleep with any game specific debuff and thats Mage in every single game while solo. Difference is procs and shit that you get but ideally they're pretty much the same.
Even if you have a point, which you do, it doesn't show me anything. Hell, Tanaka himself could arrive at the same point, simply from playing his own game.
I'm not bashing Yoshi-P; I've no need to, and it'd be a foolish thing to do, what with the changes he's already made, but I need to -see- something before I get my hopes up on the PVP system.
Do you have any hopes that any of it will be balanced? I still need to see more balance in the game as a whole before I will ever believe that SE can balance anything properly and given their track record with balance it just seems like this is going to blow up in his face. I mean people class stack in pve content, they need to convince me thats not going to happen in pvp, lol.
MMO pvp is so damn hard to balance.
Yoshi-P also said that the movement>spell interrupt may be delayed to 2.0 as well so it may not be coming before then.
The nuke>CC>nuke thing is pretty retro ala FFXI, but you see it to a lesser extent in glass cannons on other games (Mages in WoW often do nuke > frost nova or have built in snare to nuke> nuke some more). Doesn't really paint a picture of mages being particularly fun to level, the only time I enjoyed soloing on mages when levelling was vs. beastman pets because whilst requiring some vague level of concentration (without AM magic), it was pretty fun to zerg things like that. If this is a constant thing that you have to do all the way up and more than once or twice for regular enemies I'll be pretty turned off levelling mages.
Obviously that's kinda blowing it out of proportion and he stated it was just an example, but I do think there are better ways of doing it. Then again there are better ways of doing just about everything they've done so far with mages so...
Edit: As for the new videos, look pretty neat barring the obvious animation lock issues that have been pointed out numerous times before (no idea if that'll ever get sorted but I don't see how they can produce challenging content on a par with top MMOs when people are forced to stand still to do anything), and the fact that I want to see what the nukes are going to look like, I really hate how crappy the animations are for them right now D:
Edit2: Does anyone know if they're planning on getting rid of that stupid darkening thing that happens when you use a weaponskill? It's just annoying, an option to turn it off at least would be nice.
That stupid cinematic/spotlight effect when WS go off needs to go. It just turns into a light show in party play. I think it started in Beta 2 for no particular reason... wasn't even mentioned in notes.
You had me thinking of a techno rave whilst I was reading that. Unce! Unce! Unce! Unce!
@Lord: I'm not even worried about balance, so much; I just want to see a departure from the ballista-style of play, where a ranger would slugwinder someone and 5 seconds later their corpse would slide across the ground 20 feet away. I want to see more ways to catch up with someone outside of popping flee or praying that some mage spams bind enough times for it to stick. I want to see melee have a bit more options than "spam utsu through the diaga spam until you get close enough to the caster to hurt them with your pointy sticks, and the only way you're moving is by hoofing it along".
Where did Naoki Yoshida come from anyway? How and why did SE decide to pick Yoshida?
You know, I also wondered what made them pick Yoshida (not that it was a bad decision whatsoever). I think the largest production project he was a part of was Dragon Quest: Swords or some shit. He didn't seem like he had the best resume SE could find for an emergency MMORPG ground-up redesign.
You may not be too far off from that. I could easily see his boss being reminiscent of Jonah Jameson, chomping on a cigar, rolling his chair out of his office and yelling at Yoshida.
"You there! You play those Western Online Games, don'tcha?! Get in here; I've got a job for you!!"
