I actually prefer it the way they are now. I dont wanna be running through entire dungeon for an hour to just fight the boss.

Herpa derpa herp! Good thing I didn't say they are. Also, this concept is not specific to XIV in any way.

Exactly why does it have to be like Darkhold? Frankly, I am not impressed with Darkhold.

Yeah Lordender sums it up pretty much. I mean the only 2 things I found that people enjoyed (in general) were the Ifrit and Moogle fights (not the prerequisites of course nor the loot system). But even those can't really be considered a challenge at all. And your run of the mill NM or stronghold is even a bigger snooze button. After 16 months you just have those 2 "popular" rooms and not much else. Granted this is "probably" all do to double and triple timing on Version 2.0 but it needs to be amazing in implementation. Artifact Armor and flashy weapon skills are nice, but those won't make people want to stay if everything else ends up being the same or average at best.

Nothing FFXIV is doing is a "1st" in MMO history especially as a P2P fantasy MMORPG. The gimmicky Version 2.0 2.5 3.0 has already been used by other companies. A few companies have even revamped their engine while others have added literally gigabytes of updated content/patches. The main difference is to a varying degree. History has shown that these methods (as well as others) have almost never been able to regain a substantial amount of players and keep them for the long run (directly connected to a bad release/launch). Companies keep trying simply because the other choice is shutting down or going through different levels of F2P. It is possible that Version 2.0 might be the "comeback kid" but it is just extremely difficult to do so especially with how unforgiving the MMO community is especially amongst the fans and other factors as well.

FFXIV may potentially be the 3rd game in the past 9 years that might have a huge comeback. This is in regards to a MMORPG that strictly stays as a P2P model as well as having an increasing or at least a stabilized community. They will have to show (with substantial evidence) that Final Fantasy XIV-2 is the game you want play and eventually pay. I just hope that Version 2.0 doesn't turn into some sort of WoW-ification. Because if it does... welcome NGE Version 2.0.

The base game is in rather bad shape, I'm not trying to sugarcoat it. That notwithstanding, the patches (from 1.18 on?) have been fairly well received and garnered a lot of "good job" sentiment from the posters here. If (and that's still quite the "if") the base system/engine of the game is turned around significantly, all this content will be in prime position to make FFXIV 2.0 enjoyable for new players.

Well-received at the time, but Darkhold became more or less obsolete the immediate next patch (achievement aside). Ifrit and Moogle's gimmick fight mechanics are the kind of thing I want to see more of, with improvements to the surrounding mechanics (loot viability, drop rate, and drop method).

Granted, to a new player playing catch-up I guess that's a fair bit of "content".

Another thing is the timing of all of this, the MMO market is not what it was five years ago, WoW has lost around 2.4-2.5million subs over the past year and 2 months. SW:ToR looks to have a big drop off after the F2P month ended, GW2 seems to be the only MMO coming out that has enough innovation to be the next big thing after the tired model thats been the standard for years.

Copying WoW would be a terrible mistake, the model WoW uses is dying and dying fast at a rapid pace, there is no recovery for WoW if Blizzards answer continues to be the same content, SW:ToR will die if they don't get away from the type of model WoW uses, those days are over imo. I don't think P2P model is going to continue to be popular in the next age of MMO gaming.

2.0 is going to have to offer something nobody else does and SE is going to have to do it well with planning and implementation. With the massive bleeding that is WoW especially over the next QTR report when people are really tired of Dragon Soul, I expect 700-950k subs to be gone from WoW for the next investors conference call for QTR 1.

Hopeful as I'd like to be, I'm not sure I have the faith SE can do that. Screw it, I'm still hoping this turns in to a Monster Hunter clone.

Debated not cross posting this portion, but I figured it was relevant for anyone who wasn't watching the server merge thread. Feel free nuke the post if you don't think it's worth having in both.

The World names currently in use may be unfamiliar or difficult to understand for those who are not hardcore players, so we wanted to change these names to be more familiar to casual FINAL FANTASY players, as we approach the release of 2.0. Also, as we look to expand FFXIV, some of our visions for the future, such as releasing content based in Worlds from previous FF titles, will require us to use names previously reserved for Worlds as names of cities and other locations instead. (For example, we feel like Midgar has too powerful of an image associated with it to be used as a name for a World. Also, we would like to reserve the name Gold Saucer for the casino, not a world.)

Guess they are coming to their senses and are willing to capitalize on anything in their arsenal. Incoming Sephiroth fight.

Smart move. They have rights to use tons of names/places/monsters/etc. that lots of people have strong nostalgic ties to... about fucking time they take advantage of that.

I am still waiting for a battle with Ultros.

I think that's probably more XIII-2 DLC than XIV. My guess is we'll see stuff like Crystal Tower (confirmed), Gold Saucer (confirmed?), Tower of Fanatics, Tetra Master, Colosseum from numerous games, etc. I supposed we could see Sephiroth battle, but I just can't see it considering how cheap and desperate it would come off.

Considering Yoshida's obsession with adding FF7 related stuff it wouldn't surprise me. Empire has Meteor that could potentially destory the world of all things.

Well, its impact is the excuse for the (neat-looking) map redesigns. We can pretty much count on a "Northern Crater" zone. It can very well be that he's equating Aetheryte with Lifestream/Mako and that mister Nael van Darnus guy is planning on pulling a Sephiroth come 2.0.

Oh god, this thread is now about FFVII. Break out the popcorn, kiddies: SE has hit rock bottom.

I wouldn't be against some sort of Boss Battle Remix mode. Could either come up with some lore about how all the universes connect through some central nexus (ala The Dark Tower, and echo is what lets you experience it) or remove it from the lore completely and have it be some "game" from a Golden Saucer.

if ^this is what shows up at E3, and available to some extent at the release of 2.0 (if done right) I think it will pique a lot of people's interest, and return most of the playerbase lost at retail launch.

Colosseum type battles vs some recognizable FF bosses would definitely peak interest. Would be even greater if we seen some tag teams, Tidus + Jecht vs you lol
