It's more of a "they didn't try to mask" the grind type of thing. Since leves get beyond boring even before you get close to 50.

For XIV's current direction, I'm really not sold at all right now. As others have said, the instances are no where near the quality I'd expect in a modern MMO (although how much of that is limitations of the current engine? No clue). Additionally, Yoshida's aim for a themepark MMO complete with town-afking queue system is a real turnoff for me. I don't particularly want them to use XI's take on overworld content but there are certainly better options than instancing everything to the point that it feels like the overworld is a FPS lobby.
Also, i'm pretty disappointed with the grand companies so far, I was hoping for something akin to a 'next-gen' campaign etc that made it more fun/accessible/engaging/integrated into the game a a base-level. Nothing about the way this game is going strikes me as 'next-gen' at all.
Edit: Also, the quest system sucks balls right now, and is a terrible alternative to leves despite being pretty much a more inconvenient version + flavour text. I think each new zone they're doing should have a single quest chain with some challenges involved, and leave it there (+ a storyline set of missions). Then we should get more spontaneous overworld content or a GW2 event/leve hybrid of some kind to fill the rest of the content up. Personal opinion of course, but having had a chance to play GW2 for a bit it makes old claiming systems and competing over the same quest objective feel pretty stupid.
Btw, the Imperial invasion event seems to be back now. Today while doing leves for my PUG in Nanawa Mines I met the NPC after teleporting to Black Brush. The event was over so I can't tell if there are any differences.
Just finished going through each of my screenshots (Alpha to current version)... I think we take for granted how much the game has changed for the better under Yoshi. Was quite the trip. lol
So many people stopped playing... hope they pop back in soon. ;/
Edit: lol I still have all my Fight Club videos.
I'm not entirely sure if its fair to judge the direction pre-2.0. Right now they're really just giving us something to do until 2.0 comes out. I do have to agree with you on the raids and stuff. I'm not a big fan of these raids, and its the same reason why I couldn't enjoy wow, they just get old and repetitive. There's quite a bit of varied content in 2.0 and there's going to implement alliance content too, so hopefully we'll see some better stuff in the future. I'm personally looking forward to more FFXI-styled endgame content. I was a big fan of the pop nm system they had for dynamis and abyssea, and some of the older stuff like Salvage.
Yeah, 1.0 is like trying to eat gourmet food through a cheese grater.
It seems like there are a ton of things they just can't do with the current system, so I refuse to pass judgement (and I tell others to as well) until 2.0 is actually in our hands.
I'm very satisfied with changes he made. I know people bitch about combos but personally I dont mind them. It feels different than everything else I recently played.
For better or worse Yoshi has to stick to his guns and I hope the game will stand out as something else. Personally I find GW2 another boring WoW clone so for my money XIV is what I want to play.
If he adds everything he promised it will keep me entertained for a while.
Offtopic: GW2 is NOTHING like WoW, I played the beta.
@ Vadre
I totally agree, nothing has really sold me either, I don't think SE can sell this game to me unless they really blow my mind with 2.0 but even then I still don't like a lot of the design choices. I don't like the job system, I kinda hated the materia system, the questing is still terrible, Grand Companies are very underwhelming. If I am going to pay to play any MMO it better be trying to advance a genre that has really become stagnated than just going through the motions of raid 3 months then raid a new place for 3 months, rense/repeat.
Storage update that popped up on Twitter this morning.[dev1357] The Armoire
* The following feature, scheduled for patch 1.22, is in development and subject to change.
Patch 1.22 will introduce armoires—storage cabinets that can be used to store untradable gear and other similar items. Armoires will be placed in the inns rooms of each city-state, and players will be able to store and reclaim their prized possessions at their leisure. The following kinds of items will be made storable:
*Job-exclusive gear
*Seasonal event gear
*Achievement reward gear
*Bonus items (Garlond goggles, onion helm, Asuran armguards, Hermes' shoes)
*There are certain exceptions.
While armoires will be free to use, the following conditions apply:
*Item condition must be 100%
*Only one of a particular item can be stored.
*Storing an item resets its spiritbond.
Armoires are shared across all three city-states; items stored at one location can be reclaimed at another.

Just noticed this NA post too. This leads me to believe the drop rates aren't a product of 1.x but rather intended for the long term >_>
Reinheart stuff:
Is that the armoire of invincibility?! I want one!
Bleh shits gotta be at 100% to go into storage... that's stupid.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but its already been confirmed, right out of the gate from Yoshida back when 2.0 was announced, that what they are going to show is the new FMV intro sequence for 2.0 at E3. Now hopefully they also show additional videos that show the new world in real time, but it may not get shown at a press show from Sony unless they give a rep time to demonstrate the new game live at the press conference or have a booth with playable FFXIV 2.0 (Both possible). They have 2 other conventions minimum they can show off playable 2.0 before its released. Gamescon in Germany (August) and PAX West both of which happen in August. They also have TGS which happens toward the end of September. I really want them to hit it out of the park at E3 but I think we better prepare ourselves for some disappointment as it will only be 3 months after 2.0 Client was completed and they may not have a "Demo" version up and running or even a well designed Video ready to go by E3. I'd Love to be surprised and hope to be.
My guess of what we could see at E3 on the best of scenarios. FMV intro sequence at Sony Press Conference, a short video detailing the game in progress (like a minute long) at either the conference or on the show floor which shows the new areas and graphic engine. Tons of new interviews and redesigned 2.0 site dedicated to showing off the new content during and after E3.
Goddammit. Goddammit.
Actually I'm pretty sure that Yoshida said the exact opposite. He said they were going to show gameplay at E3 for everyone and that we'd get info and videos before then. There's no point in showing a new FMV when you really need to show off the differences between 1.0 and 2.0.
The gameplay one might be new, but the FMV sequence was the only thing solid that they were going to show as it was said explicitly in their 2.0 documents. The reason I bring it up is that press conference can be pretty time sensitive for some developers exposure unless they plan to have a speaker rep there who is willing to take people through the new stuff. If they intend to do what they did at the first 'tease' E3 back in 2009, which was a simple video at the conference, then expect it to be just the FMV. Having said that there is likely to be plenty on the show floor, and I expect a huge blow out of info on a new 2.0 site to catch people's attention who might have gotten curious from the press video. I also expect some stuff to show up pre-E3 to get people excited and then do an interview blitz where Yoshida takes question from around the world like he did when 2.0 was revealed and like when he went around after his first large patch last year around June.
