Good text, plus:
A Realm Reborn is due out next summer worldwide, and if it's a success, then Naoki Yoshida will have engineered one of the most astonishing turnarounds in video-game history. "This may make me a failure as a businessman," he admitted, "but to be honest, sales are secondary to me. My drive here is to regain the trust gamers had for us. I have confidence [we'll succeed], or else I wouldn't have taken on this project in the first place."
I wish him luck. Nobody wants the stuff to fail, but nobody wants to pay for an inferior product either.
That was a pretty candid and revealing interview. I've never heard anyone at SE put it as blunt as Yoshi just did:
Even after two years, I still find Yoshi-P to be a breath of fresh air. I think he could end up turning the entire company around. If ARR is a success, he's gonna need a fanmail address haha.So how did Tanaka and Square Enix let things get so bad in the first place? "To put it bluntly, I think it can be summed up by saying we were conceited," Yoshida said. "We had server troubles, technical troubles, a lack of international marketing and research, a lack of communication with gamers. There were many problems, but they were all caused by the general idea that 'we're okay, it's the FF brand, we made FF11 work.' That was the feeling not just with the FF14 team, but with Square Enix in general. That's why I said that, before anything else, we had to apologize to gamers, so that's where the official announcement in December came from."
That Yoshi. He's the man. SE picked the right man for the job. Can't wait to see what kinda PvP skills Yoshi has.
I plan to buy several copies to support Yoshi P, provided that 2.0 is as awesome as I am expecting. o.0 I have faith in Yoshi P!
Also, it might just be me, but I think the polygon.com site is down. @_@ Was hoping to read the article... damnit.
I sure hope they add an in-game way to receive registration code items (Asuran Armguards/Onion Helm/etc.) instead of only being given to newly created characters.
Also, a few dev comments:
- Incapacitation will be back in ARR, through both physical and magic-based attacks, but the wording implies that it may be something you only find in major battles and bosses.
- You will be able to open your map and click on a teleport destination (aetheryte or aethernet) to immediately teleport there. Awesome.
Best thing ever and hope more MMOs in the future adopt that traveling system.
I really don't know why they bothered putting the servers back up. I just logged in and there are 16 players on the entire server. I keep thinking I'm using the search wrong but it's set to all statuses, all regions, all classes, all companies, all languages, 1-50.
Better hurry login and take some screenshots if you need to because it won't last a week.
The only reason I'll log back in is to scour cutscenes and random NPCs for interesting lore dialog before it's indefinitely lost.
Does anyone have the public apology SE issued as i think i missed it or vaguely remember it. Was in my phase where i was so dissapointed with FFXIV i didnt even follow what was happening or what changes where coming down the line!
