XII-2 did happen though, XII-3 as well. They were called "Revenant Wings" and "Tactics Advance 2".

I really wouldn't count Revenant Wings as XII-2, but it's a spinoff so it follows the trend I mentioned. I totally forgot that game existed. I thought Tactics Advance 2 was a sequel to Tactics Advance.

Going by what Alkar says, every Ivalice game is a sequel or prequel of FFXII, as ridiculous as that sounds. Revenant Wings is the only game directly related to XII.

Yes and no. Tactics Advance 2 IS directly related to XII as both Vaan and Penelo appear and both are playable. It takes place after the events of Revenant Wings so it's technically XII-3 with different characters.
But yeah, all Ivalice games except for Tactics Advance take place in Ivalice (obviously) so they're all connected. Vagrant Story is also part of this family.
The original Tactics is one of the most recent in terms of timeline as most races that you see in the Ivalice games are now extinct.

Not that it matters to me since lollegacy and everything's capped, but I wonder how the open-world lovers will feel about dungeons being the optimal way to level.

Also, endgame is getting nerfed as the hardcore players are done with encounters.

The great thing about exping in dungeons is that you can get good gear while getting levels. There are so many options anyway so I don't think this will be an issue.

Pretty much this. No one's forcing anyone to go to dungeons to level. And besides, even FFXI lovers have to admit there was a point where something like the MMM was the way to level.

There's a difference between optimal and "You'd be stupid not to do it this way!" to consider. Easiest XI correlation may've been solo EXPing pre-Campaign/FoV/etc. vs. Partying. Why settle for 2-4k/hr when a good group on the right mobs could break 15k+? So, if open-world questing doesn't offer gear comparable to of-level dungeon drops, then I'd almost argue the EXP payout needs to be lesser. However, I'd also hate to see XIV become a raid-centric game, be it one party or an alliance for content. And that's the inevitable fate if the optimal outcome has no reasonable alternative.

WoW's the only other MMO I've played with a significant dungeon leveling component, but it had a fairly good balance. The difference, while present, was usually small enough that you would switch to the other not because it was more efficient but simply because you were bored. (This is, of course, for classes that had the option of insta-queuing, but that's a whole other can of worms.) On the other hand, the difference between a good or just decent party and soloing in XI was, as you mentioned, so absurd that you would feel like you "save" time lounging around Jeuno hoping for an invite. Soloing also had inherently higher risks and was really not a part of the culture of the game, either. Remember how we all felt about BSTs?

Not that I can make any real conclusions on if this is the way it'll work in XIV, but Yoshida seems to be taking enough cues from Blizzard to give me some faith in a certain degree of balance between the methods of leveling. At the very least, it won't differ by orders of magnitude, haha.
