Another Yoshi-P smackdown going down in the FFXIV Beta Forums. For those who are interested.
^ Some people just fail to see the big picture and the overall enjoyment factor for every player. I love that philosophy in that latest post and it should help to alleviate a lot of the strict party compositions that 1.0 was known for (though partly due to the community's unwillingness to experiment once certain LSes showed a strat).
The OF actually produced a reasonable and well-thought out thread for a change.
And to be blatantly honest, I'm on board with their point of view. o.o This is a very strange feeling...
Would it break the NDA if you gave us more detail on which threads you're talking about?
I think if you're not discussing specific mechanics about the game or posting images/videos/sound, it doesn't break the NDA. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Yeah but I mean you're not mentioning those mechanics specifically so I think it's OK.
In a way, I can see his point, but honestly, I think option 3 was the best one. You don't accomplish balance by distilling everything down to the least common denominator.
That said, the end of his post gives me some hope that we're only seeing part of the equation at the moment and that it'll make more sense in Phase 3.
Based on the Dev post about the elemental mechanics, I'm alright with where they're planning to take it.
Like he explained in the letter, it just seems to make it easier to be able to have more flexible job combinations, which is always a good thing and avoids alienating other classes in favor of others (as if FFXI was any indicator of job alienation/favoritism in the past, or even some of 1.x's fight).
I can see how people might be initially cold to the idea, but I'd like to think it'll be a good change in the long run so long as there is a proper distinction between the utility of the spells to make up for more neutral approach to elemental affinities (which was noted)!
There are methods around that, relatively easy ones, especially in light of other systems that XIV has. o.o Materia, for instance.
I do not understand why the traditional elemental mechanics would be restrictive, so long as there were ways for classes aside from Black Mage to access them.
Hope phase 2 concludes quickly... x_x
EDIT: I also think that the reason BLM was so good in 1.x was because of the way magic damage was calculated, relative to how physical damage is calculated.
Also, no other class had an attack featuring +700 ATK power (*cough* Thundara *hack*) so that might have had something to do with their unusually high damage.
Dammit I wish I could read the beta forums from work... always leave my token at home. Need dat app now!
I think what he is planning is a much better approach honestly, it gives much more distinction between spells instead of just having it based on what enemies you fight. 1, there is no preference to jobs being used only for certain encounters, 2, it makes all spells more viable in every situation instead of having an entire line of spells useless.
EDIT: Forget it, NDA. (x_x<) I talk too damn much...
As I've been told, you can "link" to the beta forums as technically, you can't see anything anyway without an account.
Pretty much, the rules seem pretty relaxed on the NDA, but "for your own safety" I would not go into detail on game mechanics, and obviously no links to images/videos/audio.
Anything that is deemed somewhat crossing the line of NDA is usually reported/checked by mods and warnings given out/content removed etc if it "crosses the line".
No token, no problems...! (for me anyway)![]()
Even at +700mab Thundara didn't hit too much/or at all harder than other peoples weaponskills.
It did have a 14s recast though.
