I want jumbo cactuar as a world boss has to spawn ff8 style just... "screen shudders and huge sand explosion and suddenly 60 ) foot cactuar striking a pose like a god damn boss"

I'm not sure that would be as funny as it used to be due to the newer cactuar design. The old traditional design added a comical/cuteness to the mobs that made em so popular. These new ones, leave something to wanted.

I would hope for the classic style cactuars... whoever made the XI ones should be shot out of cannon.

If I can't have classic cactuars, I'd rather have cactoids.

I think we can all agree XIV (and video games in general) would most certainly benefit from dinosaurs.

    Everywhere.

    Spoiler: show
Personally I really hate the reuse of old mobs, especially ones that are just "HD" carbon copies of XI mobs. If you told me that colibri SS was from XI I'd have believed you, I don't consider that a good thing.

If they're going to reuse monster concepts the least they can do is make new versions of them, the cactoids ^ from 12 being a good example.

There's a big difference between keeping certain iconic mobs the same (ie. goblins) and cutting corners to the point where the majority of mobs are things we've seen before with virtually no innovation.

They should make a dungeon where all the mobs are HD versions of 2d sprites from previous games. It'd be awesome.

On that same route, they should put an HNM in each of the starting zones in a spot that new players are likely to pass by. That way when they pass by and see the higher level players fighting something epic they'll get that "I wanna be like you when I grow up!" feeling from seeing them, in addition to being awestruck by a big-ass monster. It's shit like this from the old XI days that stick with you.

That feeling when you see a ram for the first time and you get the fuck away as fast as possible, only to later find out it's not actually that strong. And then that moment when you get 1-2 shot by a ram later because you didn't notice it had a special name.

New to this site, I've read it over the years but wow.. great posts regarding this game. My question regarding FFXIV 2.0 to all of you elites is a simple one. Will XIV have that feel that XI did when it was first released? What are your opinions on that? When FFXI was first released for the PC it was the series first MMORPG, pretty much meaning everyone who had played a FF series gave it a shot and the numbers grep fast JP/NA/EU etc. I remember the first time signing into Bismarck and having my hometown as Bastok and running killing bees in gustaberg. Or running into jeuno for the first time! UGH the excitement *nerdrage*. I think I stopped eating and going to school for two weeks... lol just kidding.

I'm sure you know what I mean though, that same feeling when you played FF7 for the first time...heh I still play it. Anyways, I really hope that XIV V2.0 can release a game that attracts us to it the same way XI took me. I spent countless hours on that game before I was banned. Do you think it will have the same appeal?

Dunno if i'm elite but I'll comment.

No it won't have that "XI feeling". Different game, different era, different players. This game doesn't even appeal to the "same type" of player XI did because of the other two factors, but many of those same players have evolved with the times and take the game for what it is; nothing more, nothing less. It's easy to spot those that haven't evolved. That's isn't meant to imply they're wrong, but they often don't understand that when you have X, Y, and Z features, adding A or B won't work. To that end the game will not have the same "discovery" aspects those old school mmos had. The genre has aged along with the players so it's not happening with XIV. Enjoy it at face value or play XI or EQ2 if that's what you're looking for.

Did you feel the same kind of excitement each time you installed and explored a new expansion (e.g., ToAU)? Did you eschew what users were saying online to go out and explore new areas on your own before checking in and finding out what people had already discovered and written? Did you find those things fun? If the answer to all of these questions is "yes," then you may, but considering that you've already read most of this forum's contents, maybe not. Whether that's worth the cost of admission to FFXIV or not is up to you.

Personally, I've enjoyed vanilla FFXI and every one of its expansions in this manner. I would purchase and install them, screw around and explore with friends blind, and later come to BG to read up on what we should actually be doing. I've always had fun. If that's what you like to do, you don't even need to ask this question.

I think you're looking for a sense of newness or a wanderlust for adventure more than the very essence of what made FFXI fun in its early days.

The feeling is going to be very different, but if you haven't played XIV 1.0 (or maybe even if you did), the newness of ARR will likely get to you. It's wondrous in a slightly different way - much of the discovery and adventure of the past arose from it being an earlier age of the internet. We didn't have wikis or central resources that clearly documented everything. XIV was designed with the current generation in mind, so the expected mindset of the player is very different.

You can still get that sense of adventure simply by avoiding external resources where possible. Explore areas on your own without knowing where it leads you to. Don't refer to an online map and fill your world map in yourself. Not research classes nor be in a rush to level up. Discover things on our own.

These days, if you want that kind of adventure you need to pace yourself for it, otherwise the flow of the game will likely brush all of that past you.

oh I remember those scenarios so many times...
I remember Sea Horror on the Selbina-Mhaura boat and how higher level players were fighting it but still died, until someone really strong came along.
I remember when I died in Valkurm and some WHM in AF raised me and I thought how cool that was.
I remember exploring Behemoth Dominion after a Qufim party, seeing King Behemoth there and dying to Meteor.

    Good times.

My most recent experience akin to this: completing a quest that necessitates gathering shellfish without actually reading about it first, and then having an Urganite pop and start eating my face (which I did not know could happen). The best.

First time playing an MMO is like your first time having sex. You may not be the most skilled and somewhat awkward, but it's pretty sweet regardless and there is no second "first time." XIV will be a fine game, but it's tough to overcome nostalgia.

Well said. Crack would have been another good analogy. Can never get that first hit high again, but you will do whatever you can to try.

You mean like that R60ish goobbue that was right outside Limsa? Or the R70ish peiste that was outside Uldah?

I mean, I guess you could say that phat lewt would have made those better, but in general, starter zones should stay for starters. I'd think the closest reasonable location for an HNM is somewhere like Elder Mosshorn's spawn area.
