Never post here anymore as I don't play the game, but was just browsing for mentions of the class/job pictures I saw released and saw this post.
I had this similar problem with a game I played a ton, and what would happen is my screen would flicker, sound would go out and the screen would go black, then come back with that error. It turned out to be my GPU dying (GTX 460) and I had to replace it. Your issue may not be that exactly (could also be a problem with things overheating), but I'd certainly get it looked at.
But yeah, I think it's your card going x_x
PM me if you want to talk about the error more and what I saw with it. I rarely check this section at all :<
You mentioned you had a Logitech controller. Are you using the Logitech Gaming Software at all? If so, you way want to disable the "Enable enhanced graphics" option under your settings tab. It kept messing with me while I was playing WoW. It wasn't until that card died, a couple of months later, that I realized that was the cause of it. If you don't that program, try looking for the Curse program. It's known to cause drivers to crash for the same reason as above.
All I have active related to the controller seems to be the Logitech Profiler, which doesn't seem to have any kind of graphics options as I go through it here. Also don't use Curse stuff.
Take it to the tech forum arus.
The "PS3 limitations" mentioned earlier (no linkshell search function or in-game wiki) seem not to be in the same mold as XI's "PS2 limitations" (e.g. we can't increase your main inventory beyond 100, so here are bunch of other inventories), but rather "non-windowed OS UI limitations" (in that Yoshi thinks such a system would be clunky on console).
In that case, PS3 vs. PS4 would make no difference; it's not like a faster processor and more RAM is going to solve the problem of how to integrate those features into the UI. Given what SE (read: Yoshi) learned from XI, and that Yoshi was able to get his own brand-new engine coded from scratch, if he doesn't already have a plan in place to deal with "PS3 limitations" of the kind that XI faced, ARR is doomed anyway.
It'll be as "doomed" as XI was, that is to say, not at all. I don't know why people keep saying doomed. Doomed to what, turn a profit for SE? You think the Japanese care about top-end potential? Hell no. If they did, they'd drop a console and pick up a PC. If they did, they'd drop the hand-helds and pick up a PC. They couldn't give two shits about top-end potential; they care about the next Dragon Quest release, the next Train Simulator release, and the next mobile phone release. Stagnation is something they're absolutely cotent with. SE can hold thousands of subs simply through releasing this game as-is to the Japanese. Its not going to be doomed.
Obviously this game costs more to run and develop for, but where is this doomed statement coming from? A loss of a game's potential in a certain area does not equal doomed. That loss annoys -me- and people -like me-. I do not ascribe to the notion that everyone shares my opinion or even values or looks at the word "potential" in the same vein as me. I am simply annoyed at the trend of consoles hamstringing potential of PC titles due to their shared nature. Take a game like Skyrim and compare the PC version of today compared to the PS3 or 360 version of today. There -is- no comparison, and if any developer of a MMO had half the spare time as a decent modder to upgrade their game, who knows where we'd be at right now.
I really wish that AOC had thrived, because they made the conscious decision to scrap plans for a console version so as to not inhibit the potential of the PC version. Of course, funcom ran the show, with one of the worst leads in the business calling the shots, and we all know how that ended up.
Of all the posts I ever expected to see attached to your username, "XI did it and that game turned out fine" is not one of them.
If SE said, "Hey, we decided to dustbin this whole ARR thing and just release XI HD instead," do you think "doomed" is a fair description of that plan? Apparently not, since XI did just fine!Obviously this game costs more to run and develop for, but where is this doomed statement coming from?
What part of "repeating 2004 mistakes in 2014 is bad" is hard to understand? If it turns out that Yoshi can't even remember the lessons SE learned 10 years ago with XI, ARR is doomed. Tanaka would seem to be a relevant data point in this regard.
Just because I hated many aspects of the "JP-first!" mentality and shitty Japanese decisions of XI, doesn't mean I either wanted to see it burn, nor believed it would ever burn. The game is fine for its little niche in the corner. I simply wanted and expected it to be more at the time. Growing up helps you get over pointless shit.
Huge difference, there. A XI HD very well might flop, because a HD remake implies that the core of the game would remain the same, and the shitty UI and decision-making would remain the same. None of that would work in today's market aside from people seeing HD mantra titties. We'd still be right back where we started, though, because good ol' Japan can't be arsed to upgrade their shit, so they wouldn't buy a HD remake if it were PC-only, and if it launched on consoles, it'd really just be the FFX HD treatment, which wouldn't result in a metric ton of sales. If SE said, "Hey, we decided to dustbin this whole ARR thing and just release XI HD instead," do you think "doomed" is a fair description of that plan? Apparently not, since XI did just fine!
And I never thought I'd hear you, Mr. "Arrowburnz fo ly4e, Homi3Z!!" acknowledging that SE made any sort of mistakes in XI. This is certainly a day for surprises. What part of "repeating 2004 mistakes in 2014 is bad" is hard to understand? If ARR flops, it won't be because of my gripes with the potential of the game. That's all I really care about. 1.0 already flopped. 2.0 can do no worse.
Actually brings up a good point.
XI basically had:
80x Inventory
80x Mog Safe
80x Storage (Potential)
80x Mog Satchel
80x Mog Locker
80x Mog Sack
---
480 inventory spaces
+
Claim Slip system, basically stored all gear from:
Salvage, Nyzul Isle, Einherjar, Assault, Abjuration, Sky, Sea, Limbus, Campaign, ZNM, Voidwatch T6 Jeuno, AF1/+1,AF2/+1, AF3/+1/+2, Event/Reward, AF2-1/+2, NNI, EinherjarII
I don't know how much stuff the slips store, but it's probably double what you could hold in active inventory. We are getting 100+150+150. While we don't need as much stuff (because no gear swapping) there is a fair amount of different gear needed for each class, including DoL and DoH. I had to get rid of a lot of stuff to make my inventory work before 1.0 went down and I only have gear for DoW/BLM/THM/MIN and then the stuff I was crafting with to level up. Even in DoW there was still different gear needed, Warrior didn't just have one tank/one dd set, there were multiple pieces I would mix and match depending on content. I didn't just keep my Bravura, Garuda's Scream was still needed.
So far I've looked what is available in ARR and tried to imagine it working seamlessly, without frustrating the shit out of me, etc, with my stuff from 1.0 and I just don't see it.
Really really hoping 2.0 has some sort of storage we don't yet know about. Housing storage, free company storage, quests to unlock additional "bags" (tabs) in your character's/retainer's inventory etc.
It is entirely plausible that you will be able to store shit in your house similar to XI. Furniture acting as actual storage units. I myself, would prefer the system where each individual furniture item would be independently pooled for storage, of course with the possibility of accessing it all from one location if need be. But I do believe you will have storage units with housing, its almost guaranteed.
I'd rather just have a shit load of inventory slots. That's what's required when you have a "Play all jobs on one character" system. I have 100+ slots in GW2, WoW, etc. I might need more for a game where I can swap in a matter of seconds.
Id rather furnature and storage be separate myself. Having to use inv to have more inv in 11 is a little annoying. Having x amount of spots for furnature/decoration storage ONLY in your house and chest for everything else would be ideal and , at least in my opinon, cause more people making their in game home more.. home like. More like Skyrim i guess where certain things were storage but without the ability to put everything in the universe in a single tiny safe the size of your hand.
This. Storage has to be a high priority when you're basing your game around being able to play 30 jobs at any time on a single character, most using different gear. Just give me massive amounts of inventory slots and a "chest" or something in the house to store misc. shit.
AT least when you create gear sets the gear stays in that set and not in your storage. But that also creates a problem of having to have multiple copies of one piece of gear if you want it in multiple sets.
So, at minimum I think we can expect one gear slot per class/job. Some of those can be used for bulk storage sure, but that basically means your number should be closer to 270+100+150+150, where I'm assuming approximately 10 slots used for 19 classes classes/8 jobs.
That puts you at 670.
The good news is there are many ways they can add storage to the game even if we dont start with a ton. Its not unreasonable to think they will if the need arises.
But you really don't need all those slots though. As you said there's no gearswap in ARR so any gear you're going to use will be stored in your set and not in your inventory. Yeah, you'll have the occasional piece of gear that's better for certain situations over what you usually wear but I'd say the slots we have are more than enough. And some sets will likely be storeable in your Inn (like AF sets in 1.0).
At this point there's really no way to know, we'll have to see how situational certain pieces are in endgame but we need those events to be added first.
