I hate to reemphasize this rather obvious (and just stated) point, but Cecil IS DRK (well, and PLD), just as Kain IS DRG. Any Final Fantasy reference to any of those three jobs will invariably be compared to DRK Cecil, PLD Cecil, DRG Kain. To pretend otherwise is just silly.
And if you're going to argue for XI DRK as archetype, shouldn't you be talking about scythe? GSD DRK was about as relevant to XI as, say, PLM WAR. Of course, scythe as a FF weapon type is almost exclusively confined to XI, so that comparison is transparently unconvincing.
If XI can arbitrarily redefine DRK as "master of the scythe," then XIV re-redefining DRK back to sword-and-board is pretty tame.
Don't really care what weapon DRK uses; throw a mace and the Witch-king of Angmar's getup on it and I'm down.
Nevermind XD
Never post when running on no sleep. z_z On-topic, I agree that a Ragnarok-style branching of Jobs would be an ideal solution to the issue of the Armory System's apparent limitations.
In fact I think it'd be pretty damn spiffy. Other jobs that use swords (Red Mage, perhaps) could use fleurets and such instead, therefore starting an entirely new branch of "Sword" jobs while not messing with the structure of the Armory system. o.o Quite workable.
If you don't know by this, you don't need to know.

I always figured since the JP definitions of classes meant what they used(GLA = Swordmaster? I think), they could just give em 1h and 2h versions of each weapon, and having said weapon type equipped could change how certain abilities/ws worked. Having a great sword equipped as a GLA would change shield WS like Shield Bash into Pommel Bash and maybe Flash into I don't know, "Darkness" or something. Incline GLA into more of a DD. But make 2H swords exclusive to DRK and sword/board exclusive to PLD.
Sorry Makwa, decent suggestion but the BG FFXIV forum section has already vetoed that. Armory System limitations, bro.
Did Kain have lancet? I always wondered where that skill ran off to after 10.
Whooaaa... You're stepping dangerously into Guild Wars 2 territory. Watch yourself, buster. Take yourself right back to limited Japanese ideas.
@Raldo: Kain did not have lancet. Kain did, however, have an unused sprite for spellcasting, which may have been the initial foundations of his spinoff Holy Dragoon transformation at Mount Ordeals came from. I believe Lancet's first incarnation was FFV. It always seemed out of the blue, because it was never strong enough to warrant any real use unless you slapped it on something like a Mystic Knight to keep the en-holy or en-flare train rolling. Khimari at least was able to suck out abilities with his.
Kain didn't need many unique skills. His usefulness was absurd simply from having a single skill. I don't get what you're trying to say here.

So uh... there's this
Hmm, I don't see a link to that on the main page.
Hmmm where is the date!! lol
Just saw this. ^^ as well...
I feel good that I am going to get that little Baby Behemoth minion as well as a non chocobo mount. Damn I will never get another Ose Jerkin but I can at least ride around on top of him!
Still really disappointed by the fact that they still do not see value in giving 1.0 CE owners the benefit of early access though. It will be interesting to see if they give ARR CE owners the same level of early access as legacy players. I can definitely see that is how they are going to get players to double dip and purchase a second box.
The post topic also indicates we may actually get a release date sometime within the next 20 hours or so. Maybe even a full CE press release. Now that they have confirmed the CE perks.
I assume the new CE will also have early access because giving it only to legacy players is kinda stupid since its just letting the people who are ahead to get further ahead
