As far as I can tell you need the ps3 code to link the account and be able to play on both. I mean if you didnt need it, then why would they tell you, you would have to buy it in the first place. If all you need is the software copy.

There's a few layers here...

Square Enix Account
|-> FFXIV Service Account 1 (PC Registration Code)
|----> FFXIV Service Account 1 Characters
|-> FFXIV Service Account 2 (PS3 Registration Code)
|----> FFXIV Service Account 2 Characters

The requirement to purchase a PS3 version if you want to play your 1.0 characters on a PS3 is only to get you the software. At that point you can play use any characters on Service Account 1 either on the PC or PS3, but not at the same time. You could throw the registration code away, give it to someone else, or register another service account to your Square Enix account. Service Account 2 characters would also be able to play on the PC or PS3, again on both systems at the same time. You can however play a character from Service Account 1 on one system and a character from Service Account 2 on another system concurrently.

So I've read the last six pages and understand most of the account linking questions. What I don't understand is the playing two+ characters on the PC simultaneously as is implied below:

So I own one code that is already linked to my SE account. I decide I want to box another account at the same time. I buy another code from the "FFXIV Service Center", link it to my SE account, and now I have it setup as Xanthe described above. Mechanically, how does this work now? I have dual monitors, do I just open two instances of the game, login and select Service Account #1 on one then Service Account #2 on the other, select the appropriate characters and have two instances side by side?

It's just weird to see SE seemingly endorse dual-boxing given they tend to nix anything that remotely helps with RMT activities.

I believe I had the portion about the PS3 registration code wrong. It's looking more like you do need to tie that code to your 1.0/Legacy service account in order to play on PS3 (which clears up my indecision on which CE to pre-order).

Regarding your question, looking at the info in KB67224 and KB67225 it sounds exactly as you hypothesize. If you're multi-boxing (several characters from separate service accounts on one PC) you'll be running multiple instances of the game. I'm not sure if it works with service accounts from separate Square Enix accounts though.
