Call in WS macro isn't that bad on its own. The fact that it was one of the annoying calls is what makes it terrible imo.
Well, actually... I don't know if I'd have done it in my WS macro. I do remember having one of the less annoying calls for my macro that would show my TP (when coordinating skillchains.)

I might have had one of the annoying calls in my sataws macro because it was annoying as fuck when people screwed up the skillchian, but I really can't be sure anymore. Chances are calls 1-5 annoyed me too much to put in my own macro lol.

I switched to call9 (I believe; whatever the plink sound was) sometime around hitting 75 just because I personally got annoyed with call1, and continued to use that until I got into endgame/Dynamis shells when people asked me to stop using calls period. (If I was doing it intentionally to be an "absolute assholish dickweed" then I wouldn't have stopped at all.) Maybe you had much better pickup parties than I did, but back then I still saw it pretty frequently.

But if you think I'm "skirting" the issue of doing stupid things, let me clear that up: I happily admit to being a n00b in the early game of XI, particularly before I had a single job at 75.

And one of those three (THF) I barely cared about at all. I didn't get 75THF until like '07 or '08.

I always hated leveling (but not meriting) and so once I had my DD job, my support job, and my lowman/THwhore job, I was done. At least one of those jobs worked for every event, so I didn't feel compelled to level another.

So while re-watching the Tour of Eorzea Part 2, in the first few moment while the warrior is walking in the desert all I can picture is someone with a train of goblins and lizards behind them running off screen with a dead party near the outpost. The text that appears should say Welcome back to hell: Valkrum Dunes Reborn.

Even simple text macros are annoying as fuck. I don't need to know what skill you're using and when! People did that in FFXIV too. Raise is about the only thing where it's helpful. Begin skill chain/battle regimen/limit break macro is fine too. But anything else no thanks.

With all the "secret stuff" people are finding, I'm really looking forward to phase 3, although I wonder if we'll see some the stuff people are finding (which sound, and look amazing)
