SCH weapon is actually a 12 inch ruler.
Maybe because it's using the same weapon and no other class has been announced? Right now we have 9 jobs and 8 classes. While it is possible that new classes are on the way, why would they reveal the job before the class?
You also have to admit that Arcanist has a lot of similarities with XI's version of Scholar: they use grimoires as weapons and their spells are DoT based.
Summoner will obviously focus more on the pets (while also losing access to Carbuncle) while Scholar could focus on more DoT spells (maybe even HoT) or have some special gimmicks in place.
It makes more sense imo than "another class with books" considering how many different weapons they could come up with if they really wanted to add more mages. Arcanist always screamed Scholar+Summoner to me ever since it was first revealed for ARR in its new form.
And this scenario also opens up a lot of possibilities for every single class if they manage to add a bunch of jobs at launch.
this is the scholar main attack
why are people still acting like them using books is indicative of anything
look at the other magic jobs; the differences in their weapons is beyond arbitrary
at the end of a day, a staff of bone or a staff of wood a mage still has magics and his is just as good as yours
or, to get the reference more clearly:
in a coat of bone or a coat of wood, a staff still has magicks and theirs is just as good as yours
I don't think it is going to come from Arcanist because it has books only, that is part of it but also the fact that ACN already kinda sounded like it was mostly DoTs and debuffs with Carby thrown in.
It didn't actually sound very Summonery despite the fact that Summoner is its job. It turning into SCH makes a lot more sense to me and I feel this will be their way of introducing the concept of 2-2 jobs. (2-1 being WAR/PLD/BRD, etc)
I don't think all of the classes will get their 2-2 jobs til later.
Scholar probably won't be using books as weapons. Does XI's use books as weapons? Nah. The books just show up when they cast spells.
Because we're talking about new classes being added post Tanaka's stupid vision. No one was forcing them to add Scholar into the game so why would they make 2 new classes that use the same type of weapons when they could've added something else? They could've added a whip class for Blue Mage (Quistis style) or a bell class for Geomancer. Nope, we have another job with books and no class in sight for it.
Thaumaturge and Conjurer come from the very beginning when Tanaka wanted mages to be different based on their magic arts and not their weapons (which is why Arcanist used a different version of staves/canes). Now Arcanist has books.
Also, I think SMN and SCH being opposite each other in the artwork is symbolic.
Either way, we'll find out soon enough.
Is the evidence of this entirely NDA-breaking?
It's already apparent that White Mage won't be losing offensive Conjurer spells like Aero/Stone... I mean, if this is true, that would solve a big problem with the multiple jobs forking off of a single class, allowing the jobs to be different enough from eachother by locking out more skills than just the cross-class stuff. From what I have witnessed/read, I can't imagine switching to Dragoon locking out any Lancer skills or the like.
Also, this doesn't seem very intuitive since using a job is simply equipping a stone. The player needs to have some idea before-hand that they would lose access to abilities and which ones.
Nevermind the identity loss of being 60+% the same ability-wise as another job that uses the same kind of weapon you do. Same weapon must mean branching jobs from a class!
Ug... losing some class abilities when on a job? There's so few as it is!! Why would anyone advocate taking away some class abilities on branched jobs in order to make branching jobs share their class more harmoniously, as opposed to using independent classes with full ability lists?
Talking about weapons for FFXI mages is meaningless, bc they mostly gravitated to elemental staves. And just how many magey weapons are there? Yeah, they might just need to call them (wands, rods, clubs, sceptres, or how about staves, poles, radicals) different stuff if they have to fit more mage jobs on independent classes with different weapons. Who cares? Tomes, Grimoires, whatever. If the description says usable by: XXX that's all I need to know. Would I care if there was a single Whip in the game usable by GLA? Not really. Its still one-handed. Doesn't fit well, but if the description says he can use it, I suppose all the mechanics line up. So by that logic maybe there could someday be a lone Dagger out there that says its equippable by THM.... omg my mind is blown. But the game doesn't automatically break if something like this were to happen. The stuff is equippable by a class because the description on the weapon says so. Get your mind around it. SE's probably keeping it pretty straight forward and orderly, but that doesn't mean that common weapons like swords, daggers, wandy/staffy things, or even books can't be shared (as in some only work for AAA but some others only work for BBB) by a few different classes that traditionally use those weapons.
Or maybe they'll split ability trees within a class somehow so branching jobs can get by without an identity crisis, and could handle differing weapon types with that also (or not). At level 4 your XXX class or job gets this ability with weapon or job stone A, or this other ability with weapon or job stone B. Maybe as the class you get to choose between the two ability trees, but the job stone forces one set or the other... IDK, seems convoluted. I still say a SCH shouldn't be able to summon in any form or fashion! And most sword jobs you might want to add later on should not have to take a bunch of hate/defense abilities like GLA!!!
To say nothing of the story/lore of the class IDK mattering and maybe being enhanced by the job's story/questline.
Shared xp? I guess class links with whichever job is higher.
I'm not saying they can't have branching jobs from 1 class to get around sharing the same kind of weapons. I'm saying there's some other hurdles though. I even tossed a couple of ideas about how you could get around the issues. Wouldn't it just be easier to say this sword is for this job and that one is for that job...? like they've done with THM and CNJ? Or this kind of book goes to SMN and this kind to SCH, and give them different classes so they can, ya know, have a different set of abilities/spells besides their job and cross class ones?
Practical use has nothing do with what they are suggesting. If we suddenly saw a picture of a generic looking char carrying a hammer I think it would be safe to assume that WHM were getting a new weapon type, not another new job or anything. There are alot of things to suggest that alot of the decision making for these things are tied to XI lore. PLD WHM relationship comes to mind. There really isnt an association in XIV between glad and con, but they are requirements to each others jobs.
I think we get to 16 jobs eventually, two branching from each main class. Not that hard to envision really:
PGL = MNK + DNC
ARC = BRD + RNG
ACN = SMN + SCH
etc.
The phase 3 date surprised me, was expecting it on the 7th/8th. But it's no big deal with E3 coming before then.
Anyone make a gif of the chocobo getting owned yet?
