Do you plan to pay people to run dungeons with you so you can lot the drops at the end?
If you're expecting there to be HNMs to monopolize and crafts to be super exclusive I think you're going to be disappointed.

Logical as your argument may be, it doesn't sound very fun, which... is the reason why we play these things, is it not?
So, someone on the forums posted that E3 day 2 will allow people to fight Ifrit and if they win they will get the Meteor t-shirt, lol?
From OF:
I wanted to offer an update regarding our plans for FFXIV: A Realm Reborn at E3!
The "battle content" that E3 attendees will be playing will be... (*drumroll*) a special version of the Ifrit battle! Attendees will take on a version of the battle against the Primal Ifrit (of course, it'll be tuned so it can be challenged by new players, so don't expect super hard mode Ifrit lol).
If the party emerges victorious, each member will win... a Meteor Survivor polo shirt!
We'll be showing footage of the battle on our day 2 livestream, so I hope you're all excited to see Ifrit in A Realm Reborn!
from the FFXIV Facebook page
*flips table*We're pleased to announce that E3 attendees will be able to challenge a special version of the Ifrit battle! Those who are able to quell the fury of the primal and emerge victorious will win the highly coveted "Meteor Survivor" polo shirt!
We'll be featuring the battle on our day 2 live stream, so be sure to tune in! Details and times: http://sqex.to/rsT
You're supposed to do that at PAX Prime SE! Why couldn't you delay launch for a week, setup a ridiculous pavilion there and launch with a bang?

I'll probably keep my Legacy character on Durandal and create a new character on one of the US servers.
5 million gil is worth 500,000 gil.
Yoshi made a big post on the data centers on the jp forums, hopefully it will clear up stuff.
This time, we have separated the data centers by JP and NA/EU, and specially regarding the location where the NA/EU data center is placed has been carefully selected by testing the data speed from around the world.
Specially for the EU region, there are many countries in EU (reworded). Infrastructure varies even with England, France, and Germany alone, so we have measured/calculated the speed from individual region to the data center, and we're making sure we can guarantee and provide enough service when building the data center. So for everyone in the EU region, please do not worry.

I'm not expecting it to be just like XI.
I am expecting it to eventually funnel down into a system that dominates every MMO out there though, which is "money talks".
And yeah admittedly it's not the MOST fun thing in the world, but I'm playing with my roommate and not spending the first few years bouncing around with randoms like I did in XI, which will be much, much better.
But honestly, with graduate school, trying to get published, work, girlfriend, etc - the thing that sounds the LEAST fun to me these days is being forced to play 5 hours a night doing events I might not want to do. Which is, unfortunately, why I've turned down every offer so far to either come back on my Legacy character and play with some of the BG regulars, or start over with a bunch of the BG regulars who plan to dominate a new server's endgame.
It's actually pretty amusing to me, I used to never get it. Back when I was doing HNMs and shit and making relics left and right I always thought the people in end-game who would only show up once a week because of other stuff were wasting their time, but now I kinda get it. If I did the same thing I'd probably get less out of the game than if I just grind money like said in previous post (gear wise) but would miss out on the really fun big fights that you get from end game / dungeon LS.
It's a dilemma. Have fun but be a shitty player and ultimately bring dishonor to famiry! Or play the game like the old JP craft-a-lots in XI and just buy the world?
I wish more of the old XI players who are coming back to XIV were posting in here, would be nice to get more perspective. I'm getting old guys, lol.
Sounds like you need to find an LS that suits your more casual playstyle. My LS doesnt run on points and all that political drama. We do events because they are fun to us. Whoever is logged on for the evening, we grab and go. Some things have a rough schedule and if u cant make it so be it, we'll just search our friends list to join.
I dont understand people who want to run LS exclusive only where they force u to come to events and forbid you to play with other LSes. If people in the LS dont want to show up for events, find someone else logged on who is willing. I refuse to play this game if it becomes a 2nd job or a chore, not having fun at that point.
First thing, its a different game, I can definitely say its going to be more time friendly. To that end I am going to play where my friends are, some legacy some not (I am not). If like me you are at the age where you are concerned about the time being spent in game etc, then you really should not be giving a crap about being hardcore and missing out on shit (accepting reality lol). I am most likely going to roll on a legacy server with some friends I know that have been around a long time, to me it will be cool to have higher level people to help out on crap going forward.
To that end there will definitely be the possibility of being a good player an not have to spend your every waking moment playing. It is definitely not FFXI.
also Beta forum says BG is awful lol
Yeah, time invested is a huge thing right now.
Is the dungeon system / HNM system really that much different? I did a bit of stuff at lv50 before they introduced a lot of the dungeons in XIV, like the Peiste / Buffalo fights and those were cool. I quit before anything else really happened so don't have much experience with it.
I will say that doing daily leves as a group to EXP was a solid couple hour commitment daily just like in XI back in 1.0. Did they ever change that? I know EXP parties were worthless during the time I was playing and the only way to EXP was doing a handful of the same leves over and over again.
Pretty different, firstly you can basically solo xp, there are group dungeons at early levels that are made for xping also, that give good armor. HMN system is gone, replaced with FATEs which is open to anyone (GW2 events like). It is a very different game from 1.0. There is no more xp party grinding (well you can but its not efficient), you can just play the game, do quests with the bonus of leveling up without really having to try. End game though is left to be seen. Won't know about that till launch really.
In 2005, everyone was busy buying as much gear as possible because gil was nearly worthless and getting worse every day. I remember talking to Corwen (Sash Corwen) who told me that he paid over a billion gil (plus trade!) for a KC. "Hold on to gil" back then was about as logical as "hold on to gold" in D3 today; it was only the unexpected crackdown on RMT that dramatically reversed gil inflation.
And if "over two years after international release" still counts as "new," you should be going to a server that allows old players. That is PRECISELY HOW grizzled veterans take advantage of newbies, not by starting from scratch on a new server with no crafting infrastructure. Unless you powerlevel every craft (which realistically will require a group of like-minded individuals), you're still likely to be hamstrung by the lack of available mats.
Personally, I think you're much better off going to a server with legacy players in a small group of 2-5 people (with all crafts leveled between you) and coordinating to take advantage of the market, identify (and maintain) bottlenecks, etc.
