It just didn't look iconic, and I hope that avatar was a vanity pet or something because that's is pretty ugly for an avatar. Even if its suppose to be only a small bit of its power.

Part of what makes it seem a little... incongruous.. is that Scholar is not really as much of science! as I expected. From the info so far, their role is based on a fairy, which seems much less scientific. (And yeah, I get that magic is pretty much the opposite of science, but I always saw Scholars as essentially analogous to Magitek: applying science to de-mystify magic.)
I could see SCH taking notes so as to study weaknesses or what not, and maybe that's what they do. But why would a SMN be writing anything? I'd think the summoning arts would be "thousands of years old" as usual.
Anyway, the words-to-caring ratio is already lopsided on this subject, even by my standards. It's not a big deal.
It isn't. Was a simple comment, just like everyone else is leaving yet the peanut gallery had to vilify us lol. I do agree @the summoning bit you posted.
They use symbology/runes to create their spells, they obviously have to place them together somewhere, hence the grimoires. This is why you see them writing and somewhat pulling it out from the book to create the spell..
Think, summoning scrolls, forming seals etc.Adepts of the art of arcanum derive their might from symbols of power born of geometric techniques hailing from across the southern seas. Held within occult grimoires, these symbols lend shape to the arcanist's aether, thereby allowing him to produce myriad powerful spells. Using the selfsame symbols to unlock the latent power contained within gemstones, arcanists are also able to summon forth the familiar known as Carbuncle to carry out their bidding.
This is the one and only "serious" post I'll make on the matter but if we must whine about why they're writing on the books:

Full Metal Alchemist, etcThe beast tribes of Eorzea worship and summon forth beings known as primals, among which are Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan. Yet what is a god to one man is a demon to another, for the city-states of Eorzea see these beings as a grave threat to their collective survival.
In times immemorial, there lived mages who had not only the power to summon the primals, but also the means to transmute the primals' essences, thus binding them to their will. Known simply as summoners, the existence of these men and women and their arcane art have been all but lost to the ages.
This would explain why some animations involve writing on the book and then pulling the page while the other animation simply had the caster pulling the page
SMNs are writing /ac "Ifrit" <me> in that book. But no seriously, in every game, anime, movie w/e, casters have to preform seals or say words out loud to summon/cast a monster/spell. You see that in Naruto with hand seals, in Harry Potter with their gibberish spells and even in FFT when summoners summon summons.
Also with the job branching being confirmed, I hope they don't add jobs that don't make sense in the way the game is right now, like a Calculator or a Blue mage. Unless they make blue mage buff type caster with white wind and mighty guard, then I don't mind.
Sure do you know anything? lol
They already explained how it works also on official site also...

its an alphabet, not seeing the issue. Symbols, Geometry, Shapes call it whatever you want lol.
Hey gyz, these airships in the 1.0 trailer, they have Flapping Wings, this doesn't make sense. In real life, air planes don't have flapping wings, it doesn't work, the airship should fall out of the sky.
FFXIV Worst Real Life Sim Ever. Will not buy.
I want to just pull magic out of my books man. That's the way it should be.
