Had a friend in Ul'dah and Gridania. We were frustrated with trying to talk at all or join party to do anything with the constant leaving/joining/tell issues. At some point I think we agreed to just not talk at all until we finished up to the part of the mission where everything converges.
Then after that, people we had met wanted to join the shell or other friends of mine wanted to join and they couldn't nail me down for nothing. It was a cluster of a weekend. :/
Yeah, I picked up a random THM for the party when getting my friends low level dungeon + ifrit clears, he tagged along and was awesome, but everyone else was on vent. So when we decided to take 15 out to go eat before the mission I couldn't send him a tell for a solid ~8-10 minutes because he was stuck in CS. So the choice became "do I just go eat and let this dude sit around wondering wtf or do I be polite and let him know? OH WAIT I CANT LOL NVM GUYS"
Edit: The fact that it just BLOCKS all message is what really pisses me off. If they just go to your chat box for you to read after CS then cool, whatever. Still kinda shitty but better than nothing. "You shall not chat!" is not really doing it for me.

Yeah, the part with the swarm of Amal'jaa iirc, right before Bowl of Embers. I just wasn't sure if he was passed that or not.
I don't even understand how solo instances stop tells. At least with cross server you could argue shitty architecture, but what's the excuse for that?
If there's anything that will ruin it for them in 2.0 it's definitely the community and party mechanics. No reason to not have global cross realm tells and friend lists in a modern MMO.
