Yo Monk could tank early XI, disagree and you were bad. Accepting is the first step but there's no program for bad so don't worry be happy.
*huge eyeroll* I clearly stated in my lengthy response to you what I had to say on that matter.
Spider-Dan, seriously. All I see is you repeating your position and not offering anything new and plugging your ears to the responses. If you can't see that your views are very one-sided and closed, I don't know what to tell you. Most people can admit when they are wrong. At least to themselves or at least to the point they let the topic that would have dropped, drop, and save some face.
You're literally complaining about how bard actually has to do *some* shit and how this *some* shit is supposedly harder than other people's shit. Your defense is weak, with using hypothetical shit and I've tried to work with them in the realm you outlined but you tend to really over exaggerate the *issues* with bard and downplay everyone else's. It'd be like 'omg curing is hard! I have to pay attention to people's health and shit, and now you guys want me to cast damaging spells! No one else has to cure! SO HARD!' and everytime you brought up 'well I have to hit combos' I'd retort 'but do you CURE?! NO? WELL THEN YOURS IS EASIER'. I honestly can't believe mp management and song management is going to be so difficult that it will break people and fights will fail because of it. And like you said, everyone in certain fights will have to think about movement. But what everyone else is talking about is how even in the cases with/without movement, melee always have to consider positioning where the archer and thaumaturge does not.
xopher has the right idea so I'm done with this stupid bard talk. I call your bluff, you've got nothing.
I didn't expect anything in this thread to make me laugh when I started drinking some. Anyways, off to work.
Think people were monk tanking up a little past the jungles and then the other tanks started to really pull away. Could be wrong, I honestly never tanked but that was just what I observed.
Probably, in which case I played with some monk tanks in XIV up until 35-40ish. Never really did endgame monk tanking because I was a WAR(or BRD) and hubby was a PLD(and MNK) so... that would have been silly if we did. :/
I believe (based on the link SD supplied above) he's talking about Monk tanking endgame stuff (though its clear his recollection is quite a bit off... assuming he even played early XI at all.)
My memory is crystal
'03-'04 MNK? The same MNK that couldn't have enough accuracy to hit(and counter) and enough ATK at the same time to reliably do damage to most endgame mobs? The same MNK that most people used as a Chi Blast whore because it couldn't do much else at endgame at the time? You serious right now?
Except he was right in that argument, as Charismatic is now pointing out. We started calling Churchill out on it when he...I've never seen someone bring up an argument where they're wrong to try and insult someone else, I can't stop laughing.
So crystal that you mentioned pizza as a food for monk, something that didn't exist in early xi.My memory is crystal
They definitely didn't use pizza *laughs* I don't think normal players were using any food and if they did it was mithkabobs. I'd be surprised if your typical random mage was eating anything too.
But I do remember people playing monk up to jungle as the tank for better or worse. I remember we tried it in garliage citadel and it didn't work out so well. Problem is my memory is going off of monk tanking was from '03 so the NA players I played with were not really doing the jobs that had to be unlocked. Your choices for tanks were pretty limited. I ended up grouping up with JP players because I was a White Mage and well... just worked out that way back then where no one was too picky.
That was the era when your party literally needed this to start:
WHM + BLM + RDM (or BRD) + tank + 2 jobs to skillchain together with that made whatever combo was effective
or people wouldn't give you the time of day no matter how blue in the face you got about explaining how it could work.
We were talking about endgame/high level tanking, not pre-jungles/jungles iirc. And the primary problem with the food isn't that people were either eating nothing or mithkabobs, it's that pizza didn't exist for like at least 3 years after the point in time we were talking about.
No one had pizza back then. Not even sushi. It didn't exist, I know this. Seriously you or the normal players were eating nothing or mithkabobs. Anyone who says otherwise is speaking bullshit to me and I'm not kidding. The mages back then wouldn't eat food either no matter what benefits you told them about because a) food cost gil b) bitches were broke because of spells and their assbackward prices c) they could get by without it.
Edit2: Maybe I saw a few eat some Galkan Sausage which always led to some commentary.
Edit:
Mages did eat those stacks of 3 or 5 min cookies come to think of it. They were cheap. But that's if they even bothered. I never saw one mage eat a fucking pie in my '03 days.
grats to partying with bads? i ate food since the moment i got to qufim--the only reason i didn't eat food before that was good luck finding food at city auction houses. i'm not arguing that melee weren't eating sushi in 2003, but putting a blanket statement that NO ONE EVER ATE FOOD YOU'RE ALL LIARS LOL is fucking ridiculous. The entire party didn't eat food, no; half of them were bads. I routinely partied with people who ate mithkabobs and cookies and pies on my way to 75 in ye olden days on red mage. Anyone who says people didn't eat food or rarely ate food is speaking bullshit and I'm not kidding.
fuck i remember being angry they reduced the duration of rolanberry pies when they made it stackable
I never said that no one ever ate food. Please. I said that your average off the boat player was not eating food because they didn't know the benefits when I started. Half of the people I partied with didn't know what skillchains were because it was literally 2 weeks into the game. I remember hitting Qufim with a Warrior who didn't know he had Provoke let alone that food was a thing you could buy and eat.
And yeah, I think if we gathered a group of people who spoke honestly about their first XI experiences they would tell you that the game didn't tell you how to do shit and you had to research deeply into figuring out these things.
And while I didn't express it, I realize that the market for mithkabobs was intense because I was one of the people selling those mithkabobs and it would sell faster than I could make them leaving many melee unable to eat food.
Edit: The liars statement was soley for the pizza/sushi/mithkabob remark. As for the mage food, I remember trying to encourage the use of food to some mages who didn't really give two shits what I had to say. But that was after I was informed about the food benefits from some JP player.
Sorry, you were making another ridiculous blanket statement. I'm not arguing everyone ate food. I'm not arguing people were popping sushi back in the dunes. I'm arguing people did eat food. ffs some fag explained to me that red mages were supposed to heal/debuff while i was soloing outside of sandoria within my first week. nigga gave me cookies too.
2 weeks into the game. just got to qufim. got cockatrices on farm status and cooking at lv23~38.I realize that the market for mithkabobs was intense because I was one of the people selling those mithkabobs and it would sell faster than I could make them
*the lowest level cockatrice is lv25, and there's 9 spawns. that's meriphataud mountains. i used to farm cockatrice meat for money back in ye golden years we're reminiscing on, and it took me till 40-something to kill the ones in sauromugue well enough (then again, lolrdm) and those still only had ~13 spawns and were lvl35+
edit: we're literally just pointing fingers at each other and arguing about bad players nearly ten years ago now
Isn't that the fucking truth, and trying to find data was a pain in the ass since everything was speculation. Even a few years into the game people still didn't know shit about some NMs "Oh it might spawn based on a timer...or on killing mobs in the area...or whenever who the fuck knows stop asking"
Some people would eat Apple Pies as well. I usually brought a stack of Mithkabobs, depending on how well the party went would decide if I used them after the first one.
I remember when I first got to dunes in Oct '03 we were trying to figure out skillchains. I was supposed to close, but I was using my WS WAY too soon; i.e. immediately after I saw the "Player readies x" message in chat. Couldn't figure out why it wasn't working for about 10 minutes until I wasn't paying attention one time and took too long to scroll through the menu (what's a macro?).
People finding out about macros + using <calls> with them were easily one of the worst things that happened. (Obviously finding out macros was fine, but the calls.... the calls) I remember coming back leveling much later in the game and seeing the: I'm readying __________! <call1>
or even worse: {Provoke} <call2>
Yeah, not all of us were born with all the knowledge of how2play like the game seemed to think we should have. I ran a giant newbie linkshell with a forum ffxi-mako.com which became ffxi-garuda.com and we were churning out guides on how to do this or that for numerous things that springboarded into a lot of other guides today. The actual general section was filled with genuinely good questions and people running around trying to answer them. One of the major guides we had was to explain to everyone how to do a skillchain and magic burst and to encourage our parties to do it. I think it was part of the Black Mage guide to tell them when to start the spell, what spell they need to use etc. It also described how to get several quested spells completed. That guide right there nearly won an award among all of us because we were so jazzed we figured out how to consistently do the "crazy awesome skillchain magic burst thing" that up until that point was always a fluke or something that only worked sometimes. (why does fire not burst will this skillchain? /derp)
I only made the White Mage guide and 'Poor man's guide to leveling up clothcraft' for that forum. Mostly people ignore that terrible White Mage guide but that 1-50 Clothcraft guide was the tits.
Then there were people who were trying to nail down what stats each food had on them. General immediate consensus prior was 'uhhh meat mithkabobs increase damage!' and then it evolved into saying 'okay based on no food and with food we think it's probably these stats'.
It's unfortunate that forum no longer exists... Even though I was the leader of the shell, one of the linksack members was the actual owner of the forum site. It changed from ffxi-mako to ffxi-garuda when I stopped playing after CoP for a year.
Rocl:
I never saw a person in any of my parties (including myself) use any rolanberry pies on Garuda in '03, swear it on my grandma's grave. And if you did--props to you because you were better than a lot of people were at the time we were playing.
If you think the average player was eating food that wasn't mithkabobs (I agree I saw galkan sausage but who was making these things, I have no clue) or going foodless then think that. Maybe my server was somehow vastly different from yours.
If we roll into late 04 and 05 when I was leveling summoner, I remember seeing a lot more people eating food... but then there were also lots of supply.
Real question: Why are we talking about FFXI?
Pre-sushi people ate apple pies and mithkabobs, tanks ate fishkabobs. Then the great era of sushi started and I grew my own rice and would abhor earthsdays when the tenshodo hideout was closed -- everyone was eating sushi. After that mages started eating cookies, aulaits existed for solo parties and thanks started eating fish tacos. I believe pizza came out after pasta making?
I think it was around quifim that someone started eating food, and people told me the importance of eating, then pretty much you'd peer pressure the noobs into doing the same thing. No one bothered in the dunes way back because deaths were so frequent in pickup parties. my day is now ruined remember this stuff and how old I am![]()
This conversation about FFXI is really getting me excited about FFXIV.
