He's saying they could make it so you can exit and reenter the dungeon to reset the timer (without dropping the group).
If you could do this then he would be right: the retry option would be useless since you'd have available an indirect way to retry which also resets the dungeon timer.
Reading comprehension dude. He's setting up a hypothetical scenario, not sure why you are ignoring it. Now if you were telling him they are never going to do what he's suggesting, that'd be a different matter.
The point is, you can't just walk in and out of a dungeon with people from different servers. I know he wants this ability but implementing full cross server play where you can transport your character to any server you want and play on it (effectively what he's wanting) is a lot more difficult than simply giving you a longer timer to retry that way. Maybe they will eventually but I imagine they have more important things to work on right now. Honestly if he needs more than 90 minutes to dick around in the Ifrit arena surely he can just go back in afterwards for another 90 minutes.
No shit, really?
He's saying "if they did what I'm suggesting, what they're implementing would be useless". You answer was "it's not useless because what you're suggesting isn't in the game"
Yea, that wasn't some epic response right there or anything. You could've told him this, however:
EDIT: You don't necessarily need cross-server guesting to allow players to leave dungeons while staying in the party. Plenty of games allow you exit to your own server and then you can still reenter the cross-server dungeon you were in, without breaking parties. Their tech is once again, behind or weird.what he's wanting) is a lot more difficult than simply giving you a longer timer to retry that way.
Surely it goes without saying that X would be useless if they did Y instead. The entire game would be useless if they made a new game. It's a silly point to be making in the first place.
But you're right, maybe I could have worded it better.
I guess this would be a lot easier to implement than my idea. But SE love their restrictions. Gotta love how you can't enter a solo instance if you are in a party for example. The game should be able to let you enter solo without dropping party.
They do have timers, you just don't always see them ticking away on the surface. There's behind-the-scenes implicit resource management going on even if you're not aware of it. This is simply making it more explicit and it really is not a problem. You're looking for a reason to complain.
I'll use Tera as an example. I can afk in an instance all day. The only time the instance will reset is if i physically leave and start a new instance or it resets after 10 mins with no one inside. I would argue that it also limits dungeon length but they seem to be doing something different with "long" dungeons such as Bahamut's Labyrinth.
They are taking those who are shy or have poor communication skills into consideration. Some people would like to finish a dungeon as quick as possible while others enjoy taking their time exploring or taking cool screenshots in various spots within the dungeon just because there is no time restriction.
I for one would be pissed if I get into a group with a tank that wants to walk his dog or a healer that has to have dinner mid dungeon and the majority agrees to wait.
WoW has/had an instance limit as well. Something like you couldn't do more than 5 or 6 instances in an hour. Once you did that it would lock you out until the timer ticked away.
And in modern MMO terms, it's basically a DPS check. I tend to abhor these because they're basically the foundation of the zerg mentality and usually solved by getting better gear instead of better skill/coordination. So, I guess I'm better hoping for more creative encounters with a dash of environmental interaction and tactics shifts.

Whelp...Hello.
This topic has certainly become widespread on the English forums, hasn’t it? This piece of information has developed into something rather complicated, so after this the rep teams for each language will make a response as necessary, but for the time being we have not announced the date for Early Access in any region. In order to prevent confusion, we would like to make this point clear.
The current status is the same as is displayed on this page:[2]
Early Access
Those who pre-order Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn and register a special early-access code will be able to play FFXIV a few days prior to the official release date!
As is mentioned above.
Until we make a further announcement, please stay tuned.
What am I whelping here?
It's been going around that early access was going to start August 20th. There was some pictures even posted in a thread here. Looking like it was a troll now.
An entire week? Oof..
I'm guessing it'll be something more like 3-4 days.
