ooh i really like the map for the level ranges. best part about it i think.
La Noscea does seem a bit messy due to the ship routes and dungeons. i personally wouldn't put dungeons on the same map, but thats me.

i didn't mind the size of the zones when i ran through. its rather small but sufficient enough to capture the scale of what the area seems to want to be (lotsa scenery terrain in zones.. like lakes and stuff). the zones do seem rather well filled with FATEs and stuff tho.. so i'm guessing they're doing this without any intention of putting more stuff in these areas in the future because theres not much room for it.

Wait. If I already had a beta code I don't need another for phase 4 right?

I thought the open beta would be the same as 1.0s open beta but if you need a code... I guess it's not?

If you've already played the XIV 2.0 Alpha or Beta or have already input a Beta Code for 2.0 Alpha or Beta and it's all linked to your Square Enix account you are fine.

Well, fixing faulty AoE detection is more straight-forward than fixing a combat system. It is also something game breaking that would obviously get fixed. There have been a lot of suggestions on how to fix the combat or change it, I have yet to see them endorse any suggestions or say they will consider changing certain parts. As a matter of fact, Yoshi P said, in one of his letters about the scope of the game, that he liked the combat the way it is because it is easy for newcomers to MMOs. That is pretty much their goal, get as many people to play the game as possible and do it by attracting a lot of MMO virgins.

One could say the reasoning behind that is they want/need to make up the finances lost from 1.0 and ARR. Could also argue that they want MMO virgins because they wont have any other experiences to compare the game to (majority of FFXI community, at least early on).

I am not trying to knock them or anything. I enjoy the game, I just don't feel like they are deserving of all the credit and fanfare they are getting just yet. I have to find the link to that letter.

the credit and fanfare is more about them being. .. On par, with the average 2013 MMO team as opposed to were they were 3-4 short little years ago. i for one dont think their doing anything ground breaking, but at least their talking to us, instead of at us.

Yeah I'm not sure why no one goes to this first. It's common sense. Why it was so easy to speedhack in XI, it was nearly undetectable if you weren't being "watched". Alternately they can implement server checks for most things though (NPC/mailbox/retainer items, etc.) But for shit like positioning checks, it falls all on latency. Lengthening cast time is such a cop-out though, but something along the lines of milliseconds wouldn't be too bad, depending on how bad it really gets. I, for one, haven't had any problems with eruptions so far 1.0/2.0 while playing on JP data centers, although we have gotten JP Button kinds of good at compensating for server latency.

We can't really be sure if they took inspiration from there, but I think you could also find examples of feedback being posted that ended up being added to the game. It's just something that could be easily missed seeing all that stuff that's being posted. Which brings me to my next point, which is that users rarely post ideas good enough to even consider looking at. Quite the contrary...

^I kept telling myself that forever. I started FFXI in 04 and couldn't get into anything else til 2011. I have tried plenty of other MMOs too. That connection to character from the older FFXI days was too good compared to any other MMO now. Every game I play now just feels like I'm controlling something I don't really give a shit about, placed on a world not build with passion.

    Immersion~

IDK... I think being as immersive as it is/once was pretty much nails it IMO. The weight of my character and the depth of world I was playing in was all I ever needed in order to keep logging in. The content was good, the story was great, the combat was embarrassing.

Nowadays it's all quick and easy. Everything is right in front of your face. UIs have more and more shit on them every single game. If it's not instant, it's bad. FFXI was pretty fucking opposite though, maybe to the extreme. lol

I'll use TERA as an example because to me it's the best example out there, and I played the game religiously for about 7 months, and another 6 or so months on/off casually. I don't really think there is a better looking MMO than TERA. The only game that came close was FFXIV 1.0, but even then, I felt it was nowhere near as clean as TERA (my opinion of course). If any game can pull off crazy effects, animations, fluidity, ETC, it's TERA. Unfortunately, everything seems like it was put together in 5 minutes. Environments are just a huge piece of land with random shit on them. It just doesn't feel deep. FFXIV 1.0 actually felt better to me than TERA, but yeah, they just didn't try so fuck that game. I can say the same for Aion.

The job class system was a massive factor as well. When you can level each and every class on 1 character as well as having such massive timesinks & endgame events that weren't obsoleted every major update, very few people rolled alts like happens very regularly in other mmo's, so you end up getting very attached to a single name on a single character.

The length of time spent attaching yourself to one character has another effect that XI seemed to capture more than the few other MMO's I messed with: Attachment to your linkshell mates. I mean think about it, for a lot of us, we spent years with the linkshells we endgamed with in XI. MMO's that you can mow through story and cap levels in a few months leave relatively little reason to stay for every one person, so people start to leave... So your friends sort of have this uhh.. turnover effect I guess you could call it? For instance a lot of the endgame linkshells in XI had low turnover rates. Sure you'd get SOME new people and some others would cycle out, but having like 12-20 people you see on a nearly daily basis for what, like 5 years in some cases? More? That's a profound attachment, or at least for me it was.

These are friends I've made for life. I live in a completely different state, have a completely new circle of friends because of XI. These are people I keep up with even today after quitting, talking to on facebook and skype and seeing in person now pretty consistently. Not a lot of MMO's have that sort of effect on people's lives, and I'm fairly certain I'm not the only one here who feels that way, or has had similar experiences.

The reason why FFXI had such a profound factor on the majority of players is because of the community. The game was so slow, so steep in it's leveling curve, that you had to attach yourself to side activities in order to keep yourself interested. The best side activity to this was interaction with other players. Theorycrafting, giving advice, or just talking about life in general. The best part about this activity was you were fully capable of doing this and not lose any skill in the process. So why not do it?

Amiricle's post is very true as well. Not having to switch alts and keeping everything on one character is one of the main reasons why FFXI kept it's immersion. Being able to do absolutely everything as one character allows it to be your avatar. Which is very unlike something like WoW, SWTOR, or GW2, which encourages you to have alts for some reason. There's a reason why we despised Non-FFXI players calling their characters "toons" for a long time.
