Well, they did introduce Scholar (a safer choice) so I can see how they were a bit pressured there not to do anything too drastic...
Can't wait for someone to bitch when SCH ends up as good of a healer as WHM (TEH ONE TROO FINEL FANTESY HAELER JOB)

I don't mind the variety, would be cool to have more than 1-2 viable healing classes, and tanks. Give people something else to pick
I mean if wow can do it, and rift can do it on cleric(3 very different modes of healing all under the same class) let alone throwing chloro into the mix, this game can do it better imo.
What's the Final Fantasy Feeling version of a third healing class?
Dancer?
SMN/WHM
Fencer or Duelist to Red Mage
Or go the FFX-2 route and just make them learn abilities that correspond to the item it mimics. Like at level 5 you learn Potion which gives the same effect as a potion but you can toss it at other people, etc. Traits could allow them to give better item efficiency or benefits, and a mix mechanic could be their level 50 ability where you combine 2 abilities for a unique effect.
I think RDM would be underwhelming in a game where elemental weaknesses are not as significant. The plus side to it is that it would really be a jack of all trades. Where WHM and BLM do not get all the elemental magics, RDM could. Even it being a debuffer/buffer similar to what was intended in XI may not function as well.
If they really wanted to they could make it work of course.
Oracle.
This is only partially sarcastic.
White Wind- in what game does SCH use this?
Gil Toss- has been on a different job in nearly every game (Samurai, Gambler, Juggler)
Black/White magic- have been used by non-BLM/WHM since FF1
Geomancy- AFAIK always used terrain, not weather
And yeah, SCH is mostly a blank slate. But I'd be saying the same thing if Dancer had a slot machine ability or if Corsair was charming pets.
White Monk, you heathens.
Scholar was suppose to have a fairy in TA2: Grimoire of the Rift, but was cut due to limitations.
Spoiler: show
Coming in FFXIV: Ghosts of Ala Mhigo... Samurai!
The Samurai reanimates the corpses of the dead as minions to fight the enemy. He also has the ability to support the party with mystical salves, and can hurl them with pinpoint accuracy from great distances. But he is not helpless on his own... he can also use a variety of long-ranged whips, many of which have extra incapacitating effects. Still, it is best to keep him out of the fray when possible, as his cloth robes do not provide much protection.
Think outside of the box, man!
