Agreed. I hope this convinces Sabean and Bochy to eat some contracts (Rowand and Zito), not to resign Ross or Torres, and actually go after some bats. I wouldn't mind a run at Reyes or Beltran so long as they don't offer them a ridiculous contract, but the giants really need some bats to help out Posey and Sandoval.

I've actually lost track of how many 1-0, 2-1, 2-0 losses our starters have taken this year. Bumgarner is getting something stupid like less then 2 runs a game support. Amazing how fortunes can change with some untimely injuries and people playing below there career averages (i'm looking right at you Huff), and banking off of people over the hill coming off decent (hi2u Tejada) or monster years (sit the fuck down Torres and Ross).

SAN FRANCISCO -- Outfielder Aaron Rowand and infielder Miguel Tejada have been designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants, a major shake-up for the stumbling defending World Series champions.

The Giants made the moves Wednesday, when they began the day trailing first-place Arizona by a season-high six games in the NL West race.

Rowand, the team's second-highest paid player behind pitcher Barry Zito, is making $12 million this season and was due the same for 2012. He was batting .233 with four home runs and 21 RBIs in 108 games.

Tejada received a $6.5 million, one-year free agent deal in December to join the Giants. He was batting .239 with four homers and 26 RBIs in 91 games.

Both players had spent time on the disabled list this season.

Tejada sealed his fate when he openly showed his displeasure for helping out the team by laughing off a sac-bunt sign and then refusing to run down the line. I've never hated a baseball player as much as I hate him.

One thing I never understood about WAR (wins above replacement player), what exactly is "replacement player" statistically speaking.

I've garnered that replacement level is slightly below average at best...

A 0.0 WAR player (a replacement player) is a solidly below-average (overall) player. The "average" MLB player is a 2.0 WAR player for a full season.

Regarding WAR and replacement-level, from the same article:

I’m sure you come across WAR all the time – it is often referred to as the “all-encompassing stat.” WAR, or Wins Above Replacement, measures five components of baseball: batting (using wOBA), fielding and baserunning, then adjusts for the difficulty of one’s position, and finally scales it to a win total above or below the theoretical “replacement player.” The replacement player is thought of as any Joe Schmo Triple-A player that could fill in during an injury or play on a really, really bad team. A perfect example would be Andy Tracy. A team full of replacement players would win ~40 games.

Put more simply, "replacement-level" is a constant used in the WAR formula. 0.0 WAR is "replacement-level." I think I read on Prospectus before that they usually perform at about 80% of league average.
