Could the Yanks Pry Away Matt Cain From San Francisco?
By Frank Russo ~ October 21st, 2011. Filed under: New York Yankees, Rumor Mill.
One of the options for the Yankees this offseason would be to use their assets to acquire another team’s young ace.
Scuttlebutt down in Tampa has the Yankees interested in sending out “feelers” to the Giants about the availability of Matt Cain. The Yankees would probably have to throw the kitchen sink at San Francisco in order to pry him away. That would mean including Montero, one of the Killer B’s, Hughes, and maybe a major league ready positional player like Brett Gardner. You’re talking a big haul for a deal like this to get done. Cain has pitched 200+ innings five straight years, and despite a losing record, has an ERA of 3.26 during that time. However, not everyone in the Yankees organization thinks he is worth that kind of expensive package.
Would the Giants be interested? All I know is Brian Sabean does not like to deal any of his pitching. Although that changed this past July when he sent top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler to the Mets in the Carlos Beltran deal. Never say never, but it wouldn’t be a deal easily pulled off. Cain is a free agent after 2012 so its possible they could use him to balance out their roster versus giving him an expensive long-term deal.
    Yankees get Matt Cain
Giants get Brett Gardner, Jesus Montero, Manny Banuelos, and Phil Hughes

I know that it's just mindless speculation at this point, but I double-fist pump snap call this deal. How do the Yankees fans feel about it?

I'll be annoyed over losing Gardner, love the speed he brings to the team. 50/50 on Hughes, it's still a toss up if he'll regain his form from two seasons ago before the all star break. Montero has been dangled in front of so many teams it's just a matter of time it seems til he is traded for some thing.

That ship sailed, they wouldn't give up that much for a guy who's going to hit FA in a year

When Dutch Oven is good, he's really good. Only took 4 starts for him to have a good one.

So everyone was like 'OH GOD PUJOLS WITH ONE OF THE GREATEST GAMES EVER' and forget to mention that two of those homers were when the game were completely out of reach..

Tonight in a fairly close game? 0-4. Way to clutch it up, Pujols.

    and scared? nah.

This is turning out to be a pretty good series. When was the last 7 game World Series? 2002?

    Something like that.

But is it just me, or is the idea of paying Pujols what he wants sort of retarded?

I think it's more like the years that's retarded. I wouldn't even think about guaranteeing him a dime over minimum for anything past 5 years, and I would be surprised if he was even worth the money at year 5.

Rangers have to win tomorrow to have any chance at winning this series. No way we can take 2 in Busch Stadium. Really need C.J. to feed off Holland's performance today. We had that happen quite a few times during the season where all 4 of our starters would have an amazing string of lights out starts. Tonights game erases that thrashing we took last night. It's a best of 3 series now.

I can't pick out a clear cut MVP in this series yet. Yes, Pujols had the historic Game 3, but as Aki said, 2 of those HRs came when the game was out of reach. He's hitless in games 1, 2, and now 4.

What I don't get.. is how are people so blind? Pujols has one World Series while A-Rod had none. Besides that? They're basically the same. Consistent offensive forces that mostly disappear in the playoffs. Congrats, Alberta. You can hit three homers in a WS game where two of them were hit in a game that's a blowout.

I wouldn't pay him for 5 years personally.

I wouldn't pay anyone over the age of 30 for over 5 years, especially not a position player. I can see it sort of for a pitcher, whose only playing 20-30 games a year.

A-Rod still has 6-7? years left on his contract and it's already not worth it.

    Yea, Angels and Giants.

And wow, I didn't know that the World Series hasn't been tied at 2 games a piece since 2003. That's crazy.

There a little mom and pop shop at the corner of Eddison Ave and Markenson Blvd that has them. /sarcasm off

Why would you need a Giants fan, whom are spread out over the country, to tell you that? You have the internet at your fingertips.

    Look it up.

Ok, you seriously must be trolling here. Pujols has been in 15 post season series over 7 years. In 7 NLDS he has hit 309 with a 438 obp 515 slug .933 ops with 4hr and 17 rbi. 5 NLCS he's hit .383 with .467obp, .713 slg 1.180 ops with 10hr 27rbi. in 3 WS he's so far batted .283 with .411 obp, .609slg and a 1.019 ops with 4hr 8rbi. Total among playoffs, 18hr, 52rbi, .337 ba, .438obp, .620 slg, 1.058 ops.

Yea he's really pulling an A-Rod over his post season career.
