Anything can happen. A 7 game lead can turn into a 2nd place finish in the span of 17 games (or a 6.5 game lead on August 27th only to blow it after a ten game losing streak). No reason to give up already and no reason to shit on somebody for being enthusiastic about their home team, even if they're not the favorites, in a thread dedicated to following and discussing whatever team you follow. But I guess a Giants fan wouldn't really know much about being an underdog, that people aren't giving a fair shake, who just happen to go out, play hard, and prove detractors wrong.

Details:

Braun gets a $10 million signing bonus and will make salaries of $19 million in 2016-18, $18 million in 2019, $16 million in 2020. The mutual option is worth up to $20 million with a $4 million buyout.

I don't understand the Braun deal. Is he a 20m/year player? Probably, he's a .400 wOBA player though his defensive metrics aren't great. Wasn't he already signed through 2016 though? What's the rush to sign him through 2020?

He was signed through 2014 I believe. The closer we get to 2014, the more expensive he'd get. Granted there's always risk but he hasn't been injury prone and has been extremely consistent. Now we have a great player locked in for his career.

Probably trying to beat the market like Colorado did with Gonzales and Tulo. I hope they intend to move him to 1B soon because he is pretty brutal in LF, and likely gonna get worse (assuming Prince leaves).

I don't think Braun is the kind of guy you build a team around though. He's a slugger and a great hitter but doesn't play a premium position and doesn't seem to be a leader, though you could correct me if I'm wrong since I really have no idea. His contract was really team friendly and I don't think it would of cost the brewers that much more if they waited. That said the extension covers him until he's 37 which is probably just when a guy like him will maybe tail off offensively.

The Tulo deal is different, if you're talking value over replacement he's probably the best player in the game by a large margin. You just don't find power-hitting defensive shortstops like him. Braun though? Corner outfielders are the easiest position to fill after first base. And that's not really a team-friendly deal since he's going to be paid $16m as a 36 year old. I suppose you could move him to first base, but again, then his relative value is even less.

He's only been in LF for two years in his life. He's got speed, not sure why you think he'll get worse. I think he'll climb up to average in defense by next year and stay there for a good 5 years.

This. If Fielder does leave (which is pretty likely now), they'll probably move McGehee to 1st and bring Gamel up to to third. Braun has looked awesome defensively for the past few years now.
