Hollywood/AF Newswire: 4/01/2011 12:01 EST: Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Total Recall, Starship Troopers) returns stateside to develop and direct The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox. The film is targeted for a Christmas 2012 release with filming expected to begin this December. This project will not follow the events of the original two productions directed by Tim Story. The last two films were critically panned yet were highly profitable for the studio. The is Verhoeven's first attempt at a comeback to the Science Fiction genre since directing fan favorites Robocop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers...and then moving back home to Dutch language films.
Paul Verhoeven has commented on his blog regarding the project this evening stating: ""My scriptwriter and I always felt that people under that kind of pressure of meeting fans expectations are really living an existential life because every decision is extremely important," Verhoeven says. "The worst and the best come out when taking on a project so dear to the fans like The Fantastic Four. I can only promise them that I will bring the same exciting style and action that I bring to all my films in the genre."

His partner and sweetheart, Sue Storm, develops the ability to become invisible at will, and becomes known as The Invisible Girl. Her younger brother, Johnny Storm, is renamed The Human Torch for his new talent of being able to summon up fire from his body when he chooses.
