Sony didn't set any precedent. Well, except that they will use the legal system to bludgeon people they don't like. But everyone already knew that.

Rather, it was Hotz who set the precedent that as long as you dot your is and cross your ts, you can get away scot free.

Well, to be fair, not many others with a last name that isn't "Hotz" would be able to collect the legal funds and get a decent defense attorney. I think at the very least, people realize what Sony may do, and it's certainly going to plant a seed of fear.

ya exactly. Not saying that sony got exactly what they want or anything, just that it's had to swallow the idea that this was 100% win for hotz

I'm surprised it hasn't already happened when he was doing the iphones. He's a college dropout at RIT, which is a great great tech school, so he must have a plan I'd say. Maybe he's turned down several jobs. Most people with that sort of capacity for brilliance don't take jobs, they make them.

Well, it was. He beat the rap, didn't even have to admit that he did anything wrong.

It's 100% of the win that was in any way possible. What more could you expect?

I don't consider those to be the only qualifications to being 100% win.

I'd also like to point out, I was on the fence during this whole thing, so I don't want you thinking I'm saying this because I support sony, just I don't see it the same way you do.

Then what exactly are your qualifications for a 100% win? And why didn't it meet those criteria? You can't just list something isn't because you don't perceive it as not and then not support it when the majority general perception is against your point of view. Especially when others already backed up their arguments as to why it is multiple times. (not trying to bash just making a general statement)

I didn't think I needed to repeat myself D: I already stated why I thought sony won on some parts.

I guess its just an ideological difference then,

I don't consider the fact that he had to pay money or the injunction a deterrent from a 100% win since when he entered it was pretty much assumed that was going to be what he had to do for a 100% win. And as far as we know we don't know the exact amounts, if any at all, (Unless it was officially stated otherwise then I'm wrong and I apologize). In addition, we don't know if the injunction is something he would consider a loss, perhaps Hotz' objective of this whole thing was a marketing scheme to get out further publicity of his own name. At least it would support his statement at the end about wanting to go into security.

That's why I added the "I don't consider", because to me they both won to some degree, just hotz much more. I think sony would have like something grander like imprisonment or some such, so they def (imo) didn't get their 100% win either. I'd say the standing would be like 25% sony 75% hotz. But again that's just me.

sony didn't walk away empty handed as far as I see it was my point.

Details of the settlement were leaked.

    Nobody paid anyone else's costs.
Hotz agreed that if Sony wanted to sue him again he'd show up in California. Sony agreed that if Hotz wanted to sue them they'd show up in NJ. This settles the jurisdiction question.
Hotz agreed he wouldn't illegally hack Sony products. (This basically is redundant, because doing illegal stuff is already prohibited)
He also agreed to agree to the EULA for any Sony product he has now or acquires in the future. (Probably because Sony couldn't prove that he ever agreed to the existing EULAs)

Sony basically got a positive PR spin out of this, that's about it.

That's the public part of the settlement. There's other documents referenced that aren't available to the court. There's a confidential part, a contract or something, that they can reveal and stick him with if he violates it, and do another civil case.

Is there an estimate or does anyone with enough legal background to generate an estimate?(not fake internet people that think they have a background)

I don't know how much lawyer + court fees would be (or was this only arbitration?)

I think he means an estimate in how much the whole court proceedings cost each party.

Sorry for the bump, but engadget is reporting that PSN is down due to "third party attacks"

Sony estimates that PSN could be down for another 2 days.
