Just from the trailer the 2D physics look far closer to classic sonic than sonic 4 and at the very least it shows that there are no more dead stops in midair. The "modern" gameplay seems pretty much identical to colors, which was a fine game.
I'm not getting my hopes up because I was completely wrong about sonic 4, but if colors is any indication then they're certainly heading in the right direction.
I enjoyed sonic 4, i honestly didn't know what i was supposed to look for in a new 2D sonic game.
This new trailer answers that question: lots of shit in the background.
Seriously though, people ripped on Sonic 4 a lot. What were people expecting to play? My only complaint about it really was that it was overpriced a bit. Overall i enjoyed it and am looking forward to episode 2 if they ever finish it (i really think they only have 3 dudes working on that shit...).
This looks alright, probably not gonna get it as i'll have better things to buy but it looks cool.
I think I might wanna play this. ;>_>
Um... Sign me up. Holy shit. lol
they have a different video at joystiq too

i do love sonic and the interview has made me rethink about buying this but i'm still not 100% sure if i want it and even tho it is for sale there is currently no release date
Depends on how much content is on the disc when it's released and if they actually attempt to make a quality product beyond just making Sonic go fast.
I really want to hear if all the people saying they might like this have ever played Unleashed or Colors. Because if you like this and say those 2 last games are garbage and yet you've never played them, then lol.
Gonna have to agree with Thilius on this one, it looks like they are using the same good engine as I originally posted that they should. Only thing is, it still looks a bit too fast for casuals. Oh well, lets see what happens.
Where is that comic strip that has the kid looking at the TV or the sonic announcement... getting all excited... then being let down?
The mention of cameos from other characters scares me. Other than that, it looks great. I'm with Hiryo too, Colors was awesome and the Light stages in Unleashed were great. The only things that irked me about that game were the "Town" scenes and the Night stages.
Interview had me sold, then I read the part about Sonic's friends making appearances and frowned... Just keep it Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Eggman. Fuck the rest. (Although the SatAM fanboy in me wouldn't mind Snively and the Freedom Fighters in some form lol)
If I'm remembering my Sonic canon correctly, Snively is already dead by the time Robotnik is replaced by the "Eggman" form from another dimension (who is, like, Pure Fucking Evil so they've already been using the wrong personality for that character model), so it's unlikely they'd be in the same media together. Then again, it's not like Sonic Team has given fuck-all about the comic canon in ... ever anyways. Amy Rose and the Chaotix are pretty much the only comic side characters to make repeated appearances in the games, that I can recall at least.
Not gonna lie though, a game set on Moebius with bowling-ball Ivo Robotnik and the Knothole Freedom Fighters would sell for me in a heartbeat.
Kinda old now but eh, i'll post it anyway
Saw this today though
Sonic Generations takes stages from past Sonic games and transforms them into brand new 2D / 3D experiences, utilizing both classic and modern versions of Sonic. In the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine UK, Sonic Generations producer Takashi Iizuka shared new insight as to how these levels were chosen.
“We took a democratic approach. We only get to celebrate Sonic’s 20th birthday once, so we wanted to make sure everyone got a say,” Iizuka told the magazine. “What we did was poll every Sega worker – including those in Europe and America – and asked them to nominate their favorite Sonic levels of all time. Then we did some research with the core fanbase and we were able to draw up a shortlist from there.”
To bring two Sonics together, Sega created a story centered around a new nemesis who “immediately sets about eradicating the very fabric of space and time.” In pursuit, modern Sonic falls through a wormhole to 1991 where he runs into his ol’ chubby self.
According to OXM, classic Sonic is “perfectly” done. They write: “Sonic’s jumps are weighted perfectly and the sense of speed is as breathtaking as it was 20 years ago.”
Iizuka answered one of the big questions, too. So far, we’ve only seen a pair of Sonics, but will his friends join the party?
“Of course, because they’re a big part of Sonic history! But they’ll only be making cameos, be it as part of the story or in the backgrounds. Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic will be the only two playable characters in the game.”
Hopes... rising... must remain cynical...“Of course, because they’re a big part of Sonic history! But they’ll only be making cameos, be it as part of the story or in the backgrounds. Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic will be the only two playable characters in the game.”
I really enjoyed all of the 2D Sonic as well as SA1 (which was flawed in a lot of ways but still fun). I never understood why SA2 got so much hate; I consider it a really solid game. Heroes was eh and not incredibly well designed and 06 was flawed but fairly fun; music was great too.
Day 1 buy for me. See you guys on the leaderboards!
